Paddy is our main food grain. Therefore, the economy and culture of the country are closely associated with it. The population of this densely populated country is increasing, on the other hand the amount of cultivable land is constantly decreasing due to houses, factories, markets, construction of roads and river erosion. There are also natural disasters such as droughts, floods, tides, salinity, cold spells and hailstorms. Our goal is to ensure food security in the country by overcoming these adversities and producing more paddy in a certain amount of land. Although Bangladesh is the fourth largest rice producing country in the world, its average yield per hectare is 4.2 tons. In China, Japan and Korea the yield is 7-8.5 tons per hectare. There is no alternative but to increase the yield of paddy in line with the food needs of the growing population of the country. It is impossible to meet this demand through the traditional varieties of paddy and the cultivation method of the Mandhata period. This requires high yielding (Ufshi) paddy and widespread introduction of modern production technology. In Bangladesh, the first Ufshi variety of rice (IR7) was cultivated in the field in 1986 by the International Rice Research Institute (IRI). The yield is 5-6 tons (18-21 manas per hectare) per hectare from this short sized paddy. Since then, Ufshi paddy has become popularly known as Eri paddy. Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRI) has been developing crop techniques, soil, water, fertilizers, etc. to increase seasonal and environmentally friendly Ufshi rice varieties and rice production since its inception in 1980. At present, rice varieties developed by Brie are being cultivated in about 60% of the total paddy land of the country and it yields about 90% of the total paddy production. Brie rice has thus been replaced by Erie rice. The web site created by us has information about improved varieties of paddy and their productivity and improved methods of paddy cultivation. We hope users will benefit by applying this information.
