In a recent interview section with Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger state took a significant step by temporarily halting the sale and distribution of food items and farm produce to other states within Nigeria.

This decision came amidst the backdrop of escalating hunger across the state and the nation at large, exacerbated by factors such as soaring inflation, removal of petrol subsidy, fluctuating currency value, and prevailing insecurity under President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Governor Bago emphasized the need to prioritize local food supply, stating, "Trucks intending to purchase foodstuffs in bulk from our local markets will be halted until further notice.

Security agencies are empowered to seize such trucks and redistribute the food to the people."

This measure aims to ensure adequate food availability for Niger residents, addressing the pervasive hunger and poverty.

Meanwhile, responding to the pressing food crisis, President Tinubu instructed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release approximately 42,000 metric tonnes of grains, including maize, millet, and garri.

Additionally, the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria pledged to release over 60,000 metric tonnes of rice to the public.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, revealed these immediate interventions after a meeting of the presidential committee on emergency food intervention.

He emphasized the urgency of these measures in alleviating the burden of high food prices faced by Nigerians, aiming to stabilize the market within the next few weeks to months.

Furthermore, the government plans to invest significantly in farming to boost production and harness the country's agricultural potential fully.

Minister Idris urged individuals and groups to refrain from hoarding essential commodities, as such actions exacerbate the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

The government remains committed to ensuring food accessibility and affordability for all citizens during this challenging period, with President Tinubu emphasizing the importance of making food available at reasonable prices.
