In the 19th century, photography became popular and many people wanted to take one, especially of their baby children. But, it was easier said than done. Babies don’t like to stand still, if they can sit on their own at all, so photographers came up with a clever solution. What you see in the photo is a baby wearing a rather long frock, but what you don’t see is its mother hiding underneath it, holding it still. The lengths they had to go for a photo then.
