One of the 33 course correction measures Nigerian governors sent to the president for economic recovery is that even the unemployed should be taxed N100 monthly. This amount is proposed to be made to vanish from their phone call credit.
Sounds like 'Gbéwiri' measures, doesn't it? You.want to tax people that need almost rehab. Sorry, 'Gbewiri' is an artful Yoruba word that describes a thief that adds a mix of cunning, extreme cleverness and speed to his notorious act.
They've exhausted their borrowing headroom and now want to raid everybody, even the poorest of the poor.
Some of the other measures are fine, but are they not the things we've been saying over the years: this ga about prudence and accountability?
There is nothing there about cutting the excesses at state levels though, so the cuts and the jerking of VAT to 10% (with an eye on 20) will go to fund the salaries of senators which is something like N1m per day and governors can keep chattering flights to anywhere they please and some will fund their families of 33 kids entirely from the state's treasury. Secret security accounts remain untouched and unharmed of course.
You see reforms?
