The day falls behind the World Valentine's Day. Even then, Sundarbans Day is celebrated across the country on 14th February to create love and affection for the Sundarbans. This forest is rich in biodiversity and provides livelihood to millions of people. The role of the Sundarbans in saving the south-western part of the country from storms is still immense. However, environmentalists' allegations, over-reliance on forests and indiscriminate human behavior are endangering its environment day by day.

The first National Sundarbans Conference was held on 14 February 2001 under the Bangladesh Environmental Movement with the initiative of Khulna University, Khulna's voluntary organization Rupantar and Parsh and participation of 60 more environmental organizations of the country. At that conference, February 14 was declared 'Sundarbans Day'. Since then, Sundarbans Day has been celebrated in the country every year. However, the whole of this event is mainly Khulna-centric. This time Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) and Sundarbans National Committee are going to make a difference.
The government is constructing a coal-fired power plant at Rampal next to the Sundarbans. The government is saying that the construction of this center will not harm the Sundarbans. On the other hand, environmentalists have strongly objected to this.
On February 8, about four hundred forests of Dhansagar patrol outpost area were burnt. With this, about 100 acres of forest land has been burnt 31 times in 19 years in the Sundarbans. Acre after acre of forest trees and shrubs have been burnt to ashes in these fires. Different species of animals have died. Different species of animals have lost their habitat.

Sharif Jamil, general secretary of the Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA), said, "This fire cannot be started alone. This fire is started at a certain time every year. Some people started this fire while fishing in the middle of the forest. It also damaged the surrounding area. Everyone knows everything, but does not take the initiative. It is possible to stop this fire if the initiative is taken in advance. '
He said, "This forest is endangered not only by fire but also by many other reasons. Forests are also being severely damaged due to the construction of industrial plants and power plants in the vicinity of the Sundarbans. The amount of this loss will increase in the future. So we have to take strong initiative now. We always say, if Sundarbans survives, Bangladesh will survive. '

Meanwhile, Abu Naser, chairman of the Save the Environment Movement (PUBA), said, "We are going through the movement. But the initiative is not happening. In fact, we still do not understand the importance of the Sundarbans. If we could, we would not do this. As a result of our movement, even though there is a power plant in Rampal, it has to use the latest technology to use coal. '
He said, "If any initiative is taken in the vicinity of the forest, the first thing to do is to think about the damage to the forest and what needs to be done to compensate for that damage." Above all, the government must understand the importance of the Sundarbans. Only then will the Sundarbans be saved. '
