The word 'Fatiha' means beginning, beginning, opening, revelation etc. Suratul Fatiha is the first surah among the 114 surahs of the Holy Quran. And for this Surah Fatiha is called 'Fatihatul Qur'an' or the beginning of the Qur'an. Surah Fatiha is also known as Surat al-Hamd, Umm al-Qur'an, Assabul Machani, Waqiyah, Suratul Kafiyyah, Suratul Kanyah, Suratush Shifa and Suratul Asas. Every sentence and word of Surah Fatiha is easy to pronounce. Surah Fatiha can be easily memorized by anyone who wishes. In Maktabs, Madrasahs and Mosques, the first chapter of the Holy Quran is given through Surah Fatiha. The first ten Surahs from the Holy Quran are taught in Maktab-Madrasa for prayer. In this case Surah Fatiha is recited first. The Qur'an states, 'We have given you seven verses of repeated recitation' (Surah Hijr: 87). Most Qur'anic commentators are of the opinion that the seven verses in which the kalima is mentioned in Surah Hijr for recitation refer to Surah Fatiha. As Surah Fatiha is recited repeatedly in every prayer, this Surah is also called Suratus Salat (Sura of Prayer). The first four verses of the seven verses of this Surah describe the praise of Allah and the last three verses describe the prayer of the servant.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Ibn Mualla RA has narrated. Once Hazrat Rasulullah SAW said, "Shall I not teach you the best surahs of the Qur'an before leaving the mosque?" Then when I wanted to leave the mosque, I said, O Messenger of Allah! Didn't you tell me to teach the best surah of the Quran? He said, It is Surah Alhamdu Lillahi Rabbil Alamin. These are the seven re-verses and the Great Quran given to me. (Bukhari). Narrated by Hazrat Ibn Abbas RA. He said, once while sitting near the Prophet, Jibraeel heard the sound of a door opening from above and raised his head and said, this door of the sky has never been opened before. The Prophet said: I saw an angel coming down through that door. Gabriel said, "This angel has never descended to earth before." The Prophet (PBUH) said, "The angel said to me, 'Accept the glad tidings of the two lights which have been given to you.' Which was not given to any prophet before you. It is the last part of Surah Fatiha and Surah Baqarah. (Muslim).

Describing the virtues of Surah Fatiha cannot end. It is mentioned in the book 'Khajinatul Asrar', "If someone recites Surah Fatiha 40 times with Bismillah before performing Fajr Sunnah prayer, then if that person is childless, he will have a child, if he is unemployed, he will get a job, if he has debt, he will be able to pay off his debt, without wealth." If you have wealth, if you are sick, you will get well and if you are in danger, you will be rescued. Hazrat Ali RA said, If a person in danger recites Surah Fatiha a thousand times, that person will not be in danger any more. Hazrat Imam Zafar Sadeq RA said, "If you feed a sick person after reciting Surah Fatiha 41 times, the sick person will be cured". (Medina in Tawarikh). Apart from this, reciting one letter of the Quran with understanding brings 10 good deeds.
