I Might Be GOOD at it, but Expect Me to Be SLOW at it!

Perhaps we all have traits that we look at and consider them the bane of our existence.

Not only that, but no matter how much we try to change or improve these particular things we consider to be our weaknesses, nothing ever really changes.

Ever since I was a little kid I have had one particular characteristic that has always felt like it has gotten in my way in life: I tend to have a very long learning curve AND I tend to be a "slow mover."

This is not to imply that I'm not good at things. In fact, I tend to be better at things than most people, but I just take a really long time to learn how to do them and then I tend to do them slowly.

In the world that generally values speed over quality that has definitely been a challenge!

I don't say that to be a "Negative Nancy," nor to complain about what life has provided; it's simply a statement of fact. Accordingly, the real challenge becomes to figure out where you belong in an environment that doesn't necessarily value what you have to offer.

"Suck it up, Buttercup!" was a piece of advice I often heard when I was growing up, and then when I was at university. Which is also when a tried to really change this core part of my being.

The outcome was really not good. I learned to "hurry up," and move quickly... with the result that I mad so many mistakes that I came across as absolutely incompetent at everything I tried.

As I aged, I gradually came to terms with the reality that I am simply a slow learner, and often a slow mover. Heck, I'm even the last to finish eating dinner, in almost any group setting!

It's one of those weird attributes that's "not a big deal" until — one day — it suddenly is.

In my beginnings, I remember being somewhat slow, but it was more from shyness than skill. Although I still have my battle with shyness (from time to time it comes back when I least need it) I learned how to be quick in the learning process, mainly in the area of building whatever, and cooking.

In fact, I am always looking for new ways to do things much faster and less complicated in the area that I have mentioned, and I also like to do it in the kitchen. I like to cook, mix flavors, and invent new combinations (maybe I see it as something to make or prepare) and lately, I am preparing to teach myself the art of making coffee like the professionals. Learning Late Art is my new challenge, not to compete with others, but to demonstrate and prove to myself that there is nothing impossible for those who set out to do something.

Thanks for visiting @oneray, and sharing your experience!

The interesting thing for me, is that once I become very familiar with something, I can actually do it very quickly as a result of mostly removing extra steps and unnecessary bits from the process.

Good luck perfecting your Latte Art skills!
