In the face of poverty - Will your bravado make any difference?

Nigeria's Currency

I look upon the poor with love and pity because I know how it feels to be beaten hands-down by poverty. It is something you can never fully understand until you find yourself in the claws of poverty. Also, this is something I genuinely can't wish on anyone.

The whole discussion about poverty usually begs a long age question;

Why can't everyone be rich? Why can't we all have enough money to spend the way we want?

I know it's an absurd thought to imagine a world where everyone is rich. I know!

Economists say it's nonsensical and useless to think of such occurrence. If we have 'the rich' there will also be 'the poor'. It doesn't matter if 3% of the world is stinkingly rich while the rest are left to depend on breadcrumbs. Haha.

They say that's how life works.

Freaking life, that is!

However, I do like to paint mental pictures of a world where everyone will have enough money to do whatever they want. I'm free to think about that, ain't I?

Lemme ask, is poverty a joke to you?

If you think poverty is a joke, try to imagine the level of desperation someone could be dealing with for the person to ever think of looking into the following:

  • If I only drink water for 2 weeks, will I die?

  • How long can humans survive without food?

  • Which edible can I buy with #1000 (apx $2) that will last for 2 weeks?

Some people conduct this research just to mess around with google and I know others do it out of curiosity. But the focus of this post is on those that mean every word in that sentence.

Have you ever wondered how desperate they have to be to consider doing any of those?

It's funny how I got sad when I saw a meme that had a couple of those questions in it.

I can't share the image because of a copyright issue but it's a meme I saw in a thread that had loads of funny memes. Of course, memes are there to make us laugh, but that particular one with all these search questions did the opposite. It brought back memories.

Now that I'm writing about this, it makes me feel like I'm incapable of laughing at jokes relating to the reality people have to face in this part of the world due to poverty. It's even worse because I can still remember when I was doing similar research with all seriousness.

Believe me when I say that 'I have come face-to-face with poverty'.

It's never a good encounter especially when you are facing it in a nation that is also suffering. A nation filled with complacent, arrogant, immoral and extravagant officials who only show their reckless bravado whenever they are filling their coffers with national treasures.

So, it's no longer a surprise for people to look for ways to survive 14 days without eating when they are facing poverty at that level. I hear moans of the poor every day. What you see on the internet is just the tip of the iceberg.

Any good news for the poor?

I'm glad I've already passed through the critical stage of poverty. I fought hard, and persevered a couple of years ago. Now, I can boldly say that I'm building for the moment and the future.

Anyone that is still in the claws of poverty will always find it hard to think straight and I won't even try to pretend that it's going to be easy to escape from it. The good news is that it's possible to transition from poverty to something in-between that and riches. Hehe.

To put words to how I escaped poverty, it's all due to God's grace... What else can I say?

We are all on this journey together. A trip to change our lives and that of people around us.
