Steps' Debut: The Group Duplicating ABBA

in mydailypost •  10 months ago

ABBA was very famous back in their day. In fact, they were even called as the "Swedish Beatles". Their legacy has lived on after decades. Then in second half 1990s, there's this British pop group, which attempted to be the era's new ABBA.

They were called Steps. The group had danceable tunes, with a lot of pop songs, even similar to ABBA. In their singing, the influence of ABBA is present.

Their first single "5, 6, 7, 8" sounds more of combination of ABBA and Aqua, and it peaked inside the top 20 of UK Singles Chart. Their first UK top 10 has been "Last Thing on My Mind" peaking at number 6.

The guys did better with their third single "One for Sorrow" which many heard the similarities of the track to ABBA's "One for Sorrow". The single reached number 2.

Finally, Steps achieved their first number 1 single in UK through the double sided single "Heartbeat" (a midtempo ballad) and their own version of the BeeGees track "Tragedy". The final single off their debut album "Step One" was "Better Best Forgotten", which peaked at number 2 in UK Singles Chart.

Steps has achieved a level of success on their debut album "Step One" when it had gone 5x platinum in UK, though they achieved moderate sales internationally. It has sold around 2.5-3 million copies worldwide despite being released in American market.
