How can a romance movie start and not end with a wedding or a proposal, at least? This is usually what fans of rom-coms look forward to in the movie, me included! I don't mind watching such movies, they are a guilty pleasure for me.
The adaptation of Kevin Kwan's novel, Crazy Rich Asians, into a romantic comedy film gives viewers a look into the culture, food, love and wealth in the Asian continent. Because of this diversity and especially the wedding scene that further fuels the romance, I love to watch this film again and again.
This all-Asian cast movie delivered outstandingly on what a fairytale wedding should look like. First, it tells the tale of a rich boy who falls in love with a girl, introduces her to his family but they disagree with his choice because she is not as wealthy as they are. The young lady faced criticism for her roots and she braved it.
The wedding was what brought all the characters together in Singapore. The main character, Nick Young (played by Henry Golding) travels back to Singapore with his girlfriend, Rachel Chu (played by Constance Wu) for the wedding of his best friend, Colin.
Though the movie did not focus on the love life of Colin, the wedding scene was spectacular and alluring. Obviously, because the families of the couple are rich, no expense was spared in planning the wedding. The hall was drenched in wealth and luxury. The wedding gown of the bride was phenomenal and beautiful.
The wedding procession rendition of Can't Help Falling In Love by Kina Grannis was sweet and heartwarming, enough to make Rachel Wu, who was also one of the bridesmaids, tear up as she watched her boyfriend, Nick Young, with love in her eyes. Maybe she was daydreaming about their day.
The bride was welcomed into the wedding hall with flowers and water flowing down from the aisle to wet her feet. I think this part has a cultural significance in Asia, I'm not sure. The wedding scene was enchanting such that it could make a girl daydream about what her own day would look like. Aiming for something like this would be setting the bar too high. That's why it's a movie, lol!
Overall, the movie is enjoyable and the cast was great. Awkwafina's character added some good humour to the movie as always. This movie is worth a watch, if you love movies with a wedding in it.
