Not long ago I read in a blog a title about the film I am going to tell you about today that caught my attention, defining it as a film "for those who still believe in the old utopias of the anti-systems".
And in fact it has a lot of it, with a humorous vein that is at the same time cordial and pleasant without exaggerating the usual clichés about friendship.
No hace mucho leì en un blog un título sobre la película que hoy les voy a comentar que me llamó la atención, definiéndola como una película "para quienes todavía creen en las viejas utopías de los antisistemas."
Y en realidad tiene mucho de ello, con una vena humorística a la vez cordial y agradable sin exagerar en los consabidos clichés sobre la amistad.
But also putting the emphasis on the main character: an actor? No, a car.
The car of which those of us who are already starting to see some white hair on our heads remember fondly because it marked a whole era.
In times of pandemic, absent major productions from major studios, Netflix produces this film already in 2019 (the pandemic had not yet hit with full force) starring Jean Reno, Hovik Keuchkerian and Susana Abaitua, and includes it in its catalog.
The very title of the film is a whole story: 4 Cans, where it makes explicit reference to the Renault 4 (4L) car model, baptized in most of the world with that name.
In Latin America for many years it seemed to be part of the landscape itself, traveling undaunted through dusty streets where finding a paved road was a real find.
Strength, reliability, comfort, easy and cheap mechanics, low fuel consumption.
You could ask anything from the 4L. And it gave it all.

En tiempos de pandemia, ausentes grandes producciones de los principales estudios, Netflix produce esta película ya en el año 2019 (la pandemia todavía no había golpeado con toda su fuerza) protagonizada por Jean Reno, Hovik Keuchkerian y Susana Abaitua, y la incluye en su catálogo.
El mismo título de la película es toda una historia: 4 Latas, donde hace explícita referencia al modelo de automóvil Renault 4 (4L), bautizado en gran parte del mundo con ese nombre.
En América Latina durante muchos años parecía hacer parte del paisaje mismo, recorriendo impertérrito calles polvorientas donde encontrar una ruta pavimentada era todo un hallazgo.
Resistencia, confiabilidad, comodidad, mecáfica fácil y barata, bajo consumo de carburante.
Todo se le podía pedir al 4L. Y él todo lo daba.
The protagonists with the 4 L on one side, parked in a dusty garage in France, the desert and three friends: Tocho played by Hovik Keuchkerian, an alcoholic who can not do less than his bottle, his French friend Jean Pierre played by Jean Reno, who decide to visit an old friend living in Mali (Africa) already at the end of life and an unknown young woman named Ely (Susana Abaitua), who actually turns out to be the daughter of the sick friend.
The three of them had been companions of adventures in their youth in the 80s. Then Joseba (the sick friend) had fallen in love with an African woman (from Mali) and had stayed to live in that country. And in France he had left an old 4L with which they traveled having fun all over Europe.
The car is stored in his daughter's garage in France, among dust and cobwebs. Getting it running and leaving will be the next goal.
The three friends, the 4L and the journey through the African desert where from time to time Gerardo Olivares, the director, remembering his times as a documentary filmmaker, gives us beautiful natural panoramas. Truly unforgettable close-ups of the desert in all its extension.
The encounter in the middle of the desert with the Japanese engineer on a science fiction motorcycle is unforgettable. Or with the truck loaded with Bedouins on both sides is hilarious.
The same goes for the Tuareg who sells fallen satellites on the Internet among the dunes or the mafioso with the harem in the middle of the desert.
Los protagonistas con el 4 L por un lado, estacionado en un polvoriento garage de Francia, el desierto y tres amigos: Tocho interpretado por Hovik Keuchkerian, un alcoholista que no puede hacer a menos de su botella, su amigo francés Jean Pierre interpretado por Jean Reno, que deciden visitar a un viejo amigo residente en Mali (Africa) ya en fin de vida y una desconocida joven llamada Ely (Susana Abaitua), quien en realidad resulta ser la hija del amigo enfermo.
Los tres habían sido en su juventud compañeros de aventuras en los años 80. Luego Joseba (el amigo enefermo) se había enamorado de una africana (de Mali) y se había quedado a vivir en ese país. Y en Francia había dejado un viejo 4L con que viajaban divirtiéndose por toda Europa.
El auto está guardado en el garage de su hija en Francia, entre polvo y telarañas. Ponerlo en funcionamiento y partir será la próxima meta.
Los tres amigos, el 4L y la travesía a través del desierto africano donde de vez en cuando Gerardo Olivares, el director, recordando sus tiempos de documentalista, nos entrega hermosos panoramas naturales. Primeros planos verdaderamente inolvidables del desierto en toda su extensión.
El encuentro en pleno desierto con el ingeniero japonés en una moto de ciencia ficción es inolvidable. O con el camión cargado de beduinos a ambos lados es desopilante.
Lo mismo vale para el tuareg que vende por internet satélites caídos entre las dunas o el mafioso con el harén en pleno desierto.

Being a comedy, it is impossible not to analyze it with a little sympathy. And even more so if it is a film by Gerardo Olivares, a filmmaker in which the relationship between man, animals and nature has always been the common thread of the plot.
Nature as a synonym of freedom and landscapes, the more remote and unspoiled the better.
It is a simple film, stripped down, fresh, without too many pretensions, although the main message is friendship.
It serves as a frame for the spectacular landscapes of the African desert.
Tratándose de una comedia es imposible no hacer el análisis con un poco de simpatía. Y mucho más si se trata de una película de Gerardo Olivares, un cineasta en el cuál la relación entre hombre, animales y naturaleza ha sido siempre el hilo conductor de la trama.
Naturaleza como sinónimo de libertad y paisajes, cuanto más remotos y virgenes mejor.
Es una película simple, despojada, fresca, sin demasiadas pretensiones, aunque el mensaje principal sea la amistad.
Que sirve de marco a los espectaculares paisajes del desierto africano.
