Then vs Now; Things I enjoy about Christmas seasons.

Christmas has become a worldwide celebration since antiquity and it's one of those celebrations I grew up to embrace, partly because Christmas is a wildely celebrated occasion in my Country and also because I'm born into a Christian home where we take the celebration seriously.

Now, the question is; what the hell counts as my favourite Christmas memory? What's the thing I enjoy so much about the Christmas season? Anything?

Of course, there is so much to enjoy about Christmas and for the most part, almost everything about the season is enjoyable. However, I've noticed that over the years, there has been a slightly significant change in the things I enjoy about Christmas season. So, let's get into them;

Things I enjoyed about Christmas seasons when I was still a kid

1. The Food: For someone like myself who comes from a family where we only eat Chicken once in a blue moon, the Christmas season usually serves as a perfect moment when we all know that there will be abundant meals to eat and there will be a well garnished fried Chicken to go with it.

Seriously, we never missed having Chicken during the Christmas season. My parents made sure of that and I know that Christmas was synonymous with "Chicken season" for me during those childhood days. Haha.

2. Christmas Cloth: For obvious reasons, I didn't have the pleasure of getting new clothes every weekend or every month. However, the little me was always certain that Mum would take us to Onitsha Main Market during the Christmas season. That's one of the biggest markets in my Country and that's where we get the pleasure of shopping for Christmas shoes, clothes and stuff like that.

Mum usually takes me and my brother and we often get clothes with similar designs... You would think we are twins. That's one of the things I enjoyed about Christmas when I was still a kiddo.

3. Travelling to the Village: This is another thing about my Childhood memory of Christmas that hits the spot. We usually travelled to our village during the Christmas season and it was always fun to reunite with my Cousins, Nephews, Nieces, Uncles and Aunts.

Back then, we innocently believed that everyone felt happy to reunite with us. Maybe they did, but being an adult has made me realize that all those smiling faces didn't mean they were happy with us. Some would rather have us dead, but that's a talk for another day.

1. Relaxation Time: Ever since I started taking care of myself financially, I now see Christmas season as a good time to relax and rest after a very hectic, busy and eventful year. Both my Christmas and New Year seasons are mostly spent in relaxation and refuelling mode. I don't remember ever going outdoors on Christmas day. I would rather eat something nice and rest my mind for the whole of that day.

2. Spiritual Reconnect: As a kid, I always went for vigil mass that welcomed us into Christmas day, but I don't think I paid good attention to the spiritual side of Christmas celebrations. At this very moment, I take that very seriously and I try to make Christmas season a good time to embrace the spiritual side of the occasion.

3. Quality Time with Family: It's been a while since I spent Christmas with family. However, even when I'm not physically celebrating that season with them, I try as much as possible to make sure they won't lack the necessary stuff during this season. I also spent quality time talking with them on that day and we even set up Video Calls to make the occasion more memorable. Hehe.

That's pretty much the memories I hold of Christmas and it keeps getting better with each passing Christmas, regardless of the shitshow we are getting from our national economy.
