The Hollywood trend of releasing a show and coming back years later to release an additional season of the show is not exactly something I enjoy. I'm an impatient dude in that regard and I don't enjoy having to wait before getting an additional episode or an additional season of a show just because it's not yet aired.
This is partly because I grew up watching kdramas and we are not used to having a season of a show and waiting for the next season to be given approval, funded, shot, and subsequently released. In case you don't know how Koreans do theirs, they focus on getting all the story packed into one full season.
That's why shows like Jumong have 81 episodes, Six Flying Dragons have 50 episodes, Nokdu Flower has 48 episodes, etc. And, all these are packed into one season.
A lot has changed in the industry since then till this very moment. Korean Drama industry has been gaining traction all over the world and big International Broadcasters are beginning to get into the Kdrama market. That's good in part because it grows the business side of Kdrama projects.
However, I find it hard to understand why Kdrama projects have been drawn into the Foreign TV show broadcasting pattern of making their TV shows seasonal. Most of the Kdramas that hit the spot in the last few years are getting recalled for additional seasons. Kdramas like;
Kingdom
The Penthouse
Alchemy of Souls
The Uncanny Counter
Tail of the Nine-Tailed, etc
Each of these dramas released additional seasons even when some of them didn't have any plans to go for additional seasons. As a Kdrama buff and someone who reviews these shows, I looked into the second season of these shows and some of them didn't have sparks that were as good as the first.
Take Uncanny Counter for an example.
The first season which was released in 2020 had everything you would want from a story of that genre. It had a good storyline and fairly decent stunt scenes. The second season however just came out of nowhere. It was released a few months ago and I watched it sometime in November.
I probably would have had lots of good things to say about it if I watched the additional season immediately after watching the first one. However, 3 years gap is long AF and I was bored to death by the second season of the show.
Make no mistakes though... The storyline wasn't bad and the acting is as good as it gets. I also believe they fitted in more iconic villains in the second season of the show.
But, something about the second season as a whole just wasn't intriguing to me. I still can't understand the reason they had to go dig up a second season for the show. That's probably a "Me Problem".
I originally planned to write a review of the second season of this show and I've had that sitting in my to-do for a very long time. I probably won't have more things to say about it than what I've already said and it's not something anyone would enjoy reading, especially if you a big fan of the show. So, I will leave things as it is.
For the record, I'm giving the second season of the show a shaky 6/10. Let's move on.
At the moment, fans are already asking for the second season of other Kdrama projects like All Of Us Are Dead, Squid Game, etc. I see what y'all are doing and I understand you want to get more thrill from watching this blend of characters in the same show.
Of course, I see all that!
However, don't be too sure you won't end up cussing at the director, scriptwriter, and the entire production crew when they give you an additional season that's poorly written and too rushed.
Can someone forward this post to the Kdrama Entertainment Industry or perhaps set me up for a discussion with them? I need to bare my heart to the folks. Haha.
