DEBATE which is more important, intelligence quotient (IQ) or emotional intelligence (EQ) has been rolling since decades ago. IQ itself is a measure of a person's intellectual intelligence, while EQ shows a person's emotional intelligence.

In 1996, Daniel Goleman through his book Emotional Quotient suggested that EQ may be more important than IQ. He reasoned, some psychologists consider that the standard in measuring IQ is too narrow and does not reflect human intelligence as a whole. Conversely, the ability to understand and express emotions can play an equal, if not more important, role in a person's way of life.

So, which one is more important?

As quoted from About.com, Tuesday (31/3/2015), IQ was once considered a determinant of a person's success. It is assumed that people with high IQ scores will achieve various achievements in their lives. However, the researchers also debated whether IQ was a product of heredity or was formed due to environmental influences.

Some critics have begun to realize that intelligence is no guarantee of success. They also realize that IQ is too narrow a concept to encompass a wide range of human abilities and intelligence.

Until now, IQ is still considered as an important element in achieving success, especially from an academic perspective. People with high IQs usually do well in school, often making more money and tend to be healthier.

However, experts also realize that IQ is not the only determinant of a person's success. Conversely, IQ is part of various influences including emotional intelligence and other things.

The concept of emotional intelligence has had a profound effect in many fields, including the world of business. Many companies now need emotional intelligence training and use EQ tests as part of their recruitment process.

Research has found that individuals with strong dream potential also tend to be more emotionally intelligent. This research shows that EQ is an important quality that must be possessed by a leader or manager.

If EQ is important, can it be taught or reinforced?

Based on an analysis based on the results of emotional and social learning programs, the answer to this question is yes. Research shows that about 50 percent of the children who took part in the program performed better, and another 40 percent showed an increase in their average score. The program is also associated with reducing the level of punishment, increasing student attendance at school, and reducing discipline problems.

A study by the Carnegie Institute of Technology shows that 85 percent of a person's financial success is due to humanistic abilities such as personality and the ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Meanwhile, technical knowledge only reaches 15 percent.

Another opinion on the importance of EQ came from Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman. This American-Israeli psychologist found that most people prefer dealing with people they like and trust than people they don't like, even if their crush sells items that are more expensive or of poorer quality.

In general, psychologists also agree that among the determinants of success, IQ only accounts for 10 percent and at most 25 percent. The rest depends on other factors, including EQ. Sumber
