If the basics aren't working, you're going to lose all that "initial enthusiasm" right down the toilet... not because this isn't cool, but because there are functioning alternatives already up and running.
If you're looking to get granny (aka "mass adoption") to consider places like this, you're starting point for simplicity is "Log in with Facebook or Google." I'm serious. That's what the mainstream social user EXPECTS. Anything much more complicated than that, and you start losing people...
