Today is Makar Sankranti. It is the Kite flying festival of India. On this day it is said that the Sun God moves from Sagittarius to Capricorn zodiac sign and it symbolizes the end of shorter days and from here on the longer days gradually start. Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn Zodiac. In India Saturn is referred to Shani Dev, so the Sun God and Shani Dev both are worshipped. Shani Dev is considered to be very powered. He can make or break anyone's life, no one wants to get into the bad books of Shani Dev. Normally this day is always celebrated on 14th Jan, but this year since it's a leap year, it falls on 15th Jan.
All this shifts of planets and Sun God symbolizes high spiritual energy and awakening. On this day very special foods are made, the most special one is Til Ladoo. Til is sesame seeds, round balls of Sesame seeds mixed with jaggery are made which are called Til Ladoo. There is a little variation of how it's celebrated in different regions of India, like in South it is celebrated as Pongal.
On this day there is a tradition of Kite Flying. It is believed that kite flying is a way to express appreciation and gratitude to Sun God. In Gujarat and Rajasthan state this festival is most celebrated. You will find the sky full of kites and almost every single individual is celebrating the festival. Flying a kite also signifies freedom and one's ability to rise up in life above all the obstacles.
While this festival is enjoyed a lot by everyone, there are some disadvantages to it. The thread that is used in flying the kit is normally very sharp and this is a threat to the birds flying in the sky. If the thread gets through any bird it can slit and injure them badly. So nowadays people are cautious about that part also.
All the Indian festivals have some spiritual significance for celebrating, that's a different thing that in today's age and time no one values these spiritual significances and everyone is only focused on the fun factor of it.
