The world over, more people are being exposed to blue light as a result of the increasing use of LED (light-emitting diode) technology. Blue light also, known as blue-ray light, is a kind of light emitted from computer screens, mobile screens, flat-screen televisions, and any other device with a screen --these are the artificial sources with high amounts of blue light.

While some researchers say that blue light from devices do not pose threats to people, others note some problem it could cause and how to avoid them..

Prolonged use of digital devices can cause strain in the eye. Research trusted source assert that users of LED technology tend to blink less often when exposed to blue light than when the digital device are not in use. The implication of this is that the fewer the blinks, the lesser the moisture in the eyes, and this leads to more strain on the eyes and this lead to more strain on the eyes with symptoms such as dry eyes, sore or irritated eyes, headaches, tired eyes, and squints. Blue light can also affect the retina.

Another danger of exposure to blue light is that it can affect your sleep cycle. Researchers have discovered that when exposed to blue light in the evening, the body doesn't release as much melatonin (the sleep-inducing hormone), and this disrupt sleep.

There are some steps to follow in other to manage the risk from blue light.

  1. Moisturize your eyes: use artificial tears- eye drops and room humidifiers--- to keep your eyes moist and not irritated while using devices with blue light.

  2. Get eyeglasses with recommended prescription: Eyeglasses help to prevent squinting at screens. Make sure to get one recommended by your optician.

  3. Regulate your screen brightness:- This helps to reduce strain on the eyes. You may want to change the screen settings on your devices to "night time". Also, you may purchase a blue-light-filtering screen to protect your eyes when using your computer at night.
