Education which is synonymous with teaching is simply an act of acquiring the knowledge needed in other to excel socially, financially, psychologically, etc.

According to Wikipedia Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, habits, and personal development.

CLASSIFICATION OF EDUCATION

Education can be divided into three main categories which include;

• Formal education:

This is the type of education that is more mandatory for privileged individuals up to a certain age. It usually takes place in locations regarded as school and is mostly divided into different levels which are, Nursery, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.

• Non-formal education:

Non-formal education is a type of education mostly acquired in social environments such as workplaces, churches, organizations, etc.

• Informal education

Informal education is the type that occurs more often as it is any type of education or knowledge that affects the way we think, our judgment, our perspective, etc. This type of education usually occurs in the family.

HISTORY OF EDUCATION AND METHODS OF EDUCATING

The history of education is as old as time itself because older humans have since ancient times passed the knowledge to the younger ones in other for them to adapt peacefully in the society. This knowledge is usually passed directly through storytelling and indirectly through imitation.

Formal education can be said to be founded by Plato who founded the Academy of Athens popularly known as the first learning institution in the whole of Europe.

The institution of Athens was later succeeded by the institution of Alexandria the great in Egypt at 330 BCE.

These institutions have a more formal way of passing knowledge as regards to culture and social behavior and other ways of which knowledge is transmitted includes;

• Teaching
• Training
• Discussion
• Correction, etc.

Education is highly important in the society and some of its benefits includes;

• Education helps one to understand one's environment and know how to better cope with it.

• Education increases the level of good manners in individuals.

• Education provides one with an opportunity of having a good future.

• Education aids one in securing a good job.

• Education encourages a good sense of judgment.

PROBLEMS FACED BY FORMAL EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Nigeria's educational systems have been faced with a lot of challenges and some of them include;

• Corruption

• Lack of infrastructure

• Lack of discipline on the side of students

• Bad governance

• Poor distribution of funds

• Lack of funding

• Poor learning environment

• Lack of learning aids

• Unseriousness amongst students and teachers

• Exam malpractice

• Greed

• Poor payments of teachers

• The issue ASUU is having with FG.

WAYS TO IMPROVE THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION

• Increase in educational funds.

• Prevention of exam malpractice.

• Federal government should meet the need of Asuu.

• provision of lending aids.

• Building a more conducive learning environment.

• Increase in teachers allowance.

• Good governance.

• Provision of learning infrastructure, etc.
