Hello BLURT Community
Trust you guys are having a great day. Today I will be discussing the topic "Plagiarism".

What is Plagiarism??
Plagiarism can happen in many different ways. It can happen in the business world, in the entertainment industry like copying someone's music or movie without the person's permission but it is often associated with text like assignment, journals, articles etc. Plagiarism in simple term means copying other people's ideas or works like assignment, text books, journals, articles etc. without being authorized to do so or without given credit to the original owner like putting the source or referencing it properly and taking credit for it.

An example is when a researcher copy a particular content or contents from a textbook into his or her own research work without providing the source or referencing the author.

Another example is when somebody steals someone's music or movie without the original owner's permission and poses as the original owner.

Why People Plagiarize

  1. They don't have confidence in themselves
  2. They are too lazy to come up with their own ideas.
  3. The period given to them to complete a particular research or assignment may be too short.

How to Avoid Plagiarism
Referencing: After you must have copy somebody's idea or content, it is pertinent you reference it by providing the name of the author and the year it was written.

Quotation Marks: Providing quotation mark to indicate that the idea is not yours is very important.

Summarize the Content: Another way to avoid Plagiarism is summarizing the content or paraphrasing it. After reading a book or content you can decide to summarize it by writing what you understand from the content you read in your own words. Also while paraphrasing, don't forget to include the source.

Disadvantages of Plagiarism

  1. It can lead to work being rejected
  2. Plagiarising people's music or movies is taking money that does not belong to you.
  3. It is punishable by law in some countries in the form of paying fine etc.

Types of Plagiarism

Direct Plagiarism: This means copying the entire work without properly referencing the original owner or author.

Unintentional Plagiarism: This means copying someone's ideas without properly referencing or acknowledging them or forgetting to reference them in the process.

Self-plagiarism: This means copying a work you have previously published and publishing it again.
