In early April, my back yard was just frozen lawn. Today, I have a full garden, from which I've been feeding my family for weeks - and just put peas and lettuce in for a fall harvest!
Here are the latest daily update photos:
I think this is about as green as it has got all year! I posted recently about how here in Northwestern BC Canada we got Summer in Spring, and now we're getting Spring in Summer. That's not ideal for plants (or wildlife), but the gardener can still produce food by working hard... and smart. Having several different crops going at once reduces the chance one problem will ruin your whole year. You can see that strategy in effect as you watch the following clip:
More than 4 months of putting in an hour or two, just about every afternoon... that's nearly 200 man hours. But it has been intensely rewarding! And much of the work will benefit me (or my family) in the future. We won't have as much digging to do in the Spring, that's for sure!
We can speed it up even more, paying attention this time to the way crops grow up, mature, get harvested, and then cleared away to make way for more plants:
It should be interesting to watch the entire gardening year (April to November) all at once.
For now, I'm enjoying the garden. Here's a shot of a tomato plant I have growing in a pot beside the deck:
Thanks for visiting my garden! Remember to check out my last big garden post for more.
Because this season isn't finished yet!
Keep on growing.

Looks like you are enjoying what you been doing in your garden. The next time you will plant you will be expert already of the do's and dont's. I enjoyed so much your gardening series.👍Keep it up!
No way I will be starting my own gather too next here. Already gotten a land to use. I believe next year I will be sharing my stories about my little gather too.
Very nice! I just pulled up all my cucumbers, after canning more than I care to count, and will put in carrots, beets, rutabaga, lettuce and napa cabbage soon. Did you grow any cabbage? A few days ago I put up a batch of Curtido, a fermented salvadoran sour kraut, that is starting to taste very very good.
Although your patio will freeze again, you already did the hardest work this year; You won't have to work as many hours to make this garden, although you could expand a similar new area next to it. You would double your harvest without a doubt.
Tomato 🍅 samad is very testy food..
