Keeping things green during a dry spell

in garden •  last year  (edited)

We had a dryer-than-normal Spring here in Northwestern BC, Canada. The first week of Summer has already been sweltering, without a drop of rain. It's supposed to be cool and wet here, pretty much all year round! But I'm adjusting to the heat, and so is my gardening strategy.

Proper watering is a big part of surviving hot and dry weather! My peas need to stay cool and hydrated.

About half my 50ish pea plants are flowering now. If they dry out now, they'll finish up for the year (before they even begin).

They liked the trellises I built for them, but some of the pea plants prefer growing in a less organized fashion...

The potatoes (I have 4 varieties) are all very happy in this soil. Hopefully the yield is large and they taste good, to justify dedicating so much garden space to them!

The carrots are looking bushy and healthy:

But most of them are still quite small below the ground:

The beans got quite battered by a rain storm a couple weeks ago, but they're sending out a fresh set of leaves, and probably going to flower soon.

Finally, the tomato seeds I planted directly into the garden have begun to grow. I guess they were waiting for the warmer weather? Hopefully they really take off, and become massive in July, so they can produce a ton of tomatoes in August and September!

That poor pumpkin plant is still alive. I've been giving it extra shade (using cardboard panels), but the leaves are turning yellow. Growth seems to have stopped. And now, there's a flower getting ready to open. I guess the plant got shocked by the rough transplant, and is trying to produce offspring before it dies. Don't give up yet! We can nurse you back to full health, and there will be plenty of time for making babies as the Summer progresses.

The nearby sunflowers are doing well. I planted a handful of seeds, and I think every one of them came up. Here's a few out of the 30 or so:

There's also a few small squash plants coming up back there.

I don't water the weeds around the property... but they grow anyway! I like this one, because it's attractive, and also brings honeybees to the garden.

Speaking of flowers, I planted a dahlia bulb a few weeks ago. This variety will produce red star-shaped blossoms each mid to late Summer.

My row of swiss chard is getting more interesting, but not by much. This is my first time growing it. I like the colours.

The lawn, covered in green moss because it is normally dark and wet here, is drying out. The moss is turning red.

You can see the redness spreading across the lawn in today's update photo:

Today's weather forecast just updated, and now they're saying it's going to be 30 degrees Celsius. The coming week is supposed to be between 25 and 32 degrees, with zero chance of rain. That's about 15 degrees warmer than average here in Northern Canada! A difference of a few degrees is enough to get people talking... 5 degrees breaks records. 15 degrees is absolutely unheard of, and will have dramatic wide-ranging effects. Food suppliers are already talking about more shortages and higher prices coming this year.

Personally, I'm used to gardening in these conditions, so I'll be able to adjust. The tomatoes will enjoy it, the beans and potatoes will be fine, and the lettuce and peas will get another chance next Spring. Perhaps this is good practice for what's coming next - even more drastic geoengineering (weather manipulation) to support the climate change hoax. Temperature and rainfall extremes are the main way this is being done. I want to be able to weather anything that comes our way, and being able to produce food right at home is a great start. Thanks for following along!

Potatoes are a delicious food. The bulbs in your garden are like potato plants in our country. Potatoes are cultivated once a year in our country. Light is available throughout the year. In our country every curry has potato, without eating potato it seems that there is no taste. Many times it is seen that people who eat more potatoes in our country become very fat. Nice to see the potato plants in your garden.

That garden eden! 😜❤️🌱

Probably, the rains that were supposed to fall to the north, came to the south. In Chile, it has rained so much these days that several main rivers have overflowed, causing material damage and some missing people.

I hope that everything returns to normal, and in your country, the weather can improve so that the sun does not burn the seedlings that are growing very well. Both the tomato and the potato will yield so many fruits that there will be plenty left over to do some bartering.

Trees are our absolute friends. The more trees are planted, the cooler the environment will be. Trees give us oxygen and the carbon dioxide we give off is taken back by trees. Trees play an important role in saving the toxic environment.

Your garden environment is looking beautiful day by day. You're not just gardening, you should be learning from this garden.
We should all be entrepreneurs like you.
