The forecast calls for intense heat (30C) here in Northern BC, just days after the last frost! So I am trying to dig up some garden space and get crops planted as fast as I can.
The second garden begins! It will be the same size as the first, and extend along the left side of the yard to the rough area.
That night, we were visited by a housecat prowling for somewhere to use as a toilet.
But that's cleaned up and we're back on track. The hot weather is coming, and I don't even have half of my Spring crops planted yet!
I did manage to plant another row of lettuce. But lettuce only does well in cool weather. My hope is that after the early heatwave, May cools down, and June is wet and mild. Summer can wait until July.
Today, I put in 2 new rows, up at the top:
Now, it's just a matter of chipping away at the space between them. By the end of May, I hope to have it like so:
And now it's about time for another GIF of the progress over the past few weeks:
With the newfound space, I added another row of peas (tall green shelling peas), and 4 rows of Yukon Gold potatoes:
So I now have:
- leafy green lettuce (up)
- spinach (up)
- carrot (up)
- garlic (up)
- romaine lettuce
- shallot onions
- yukon gold potatoes
- 2 types of green peas
- leafy red lettuce
And want to do quite a few beans and tomatoes this year, too.
So it's definitely coming along, but I have a lot more steady work ahead of me. There's an early heatwave coming this weekend, and I have to figure out how to keep animals out of the garden.
Thanks for following along my garden adventure here in this new place!

Look into planting some squash. It's hearty and does well in areas that don't get direct Sun.
You're right, I should plant some squash. Maybe in the rough area at the back, to either side of the fire pit? It's good ground cover, and I have plenty of seeds ready to go.
It needs full Sun. Make sure the area gets at least 8 hours. If the rough area gets good Sun, that is the optimal space.
Oh, I thought it does well in areas that don't get direct Sun?
There are some trees in the back of the yard, but that's the North side of the yard so their shadows shouldn't be a problem.
I've seen chicken wire set horizontally and raised on a few wooden stakes work well. Cats can't 'dig' through the wire, and that drives them nuts. My varmets are white tailed deer, and they eat everything to the ground!
I like your vegetables mix, you should look at fermentation for preservation. Not much gear needed, and the results are vegetables with more bio-availability. As long as your kids see you eating it, they will develop a taste for it.
Impressive progress, you will see good returns for your efforts! I know your growing season is short, but it looks like you're making good use of that time.

I would like to know how many kilos of beans and potatoes you can collect when you plant like this.
When you harvest, how long does what you harvest last? Do you barter with someone for another product?
In my hometown, 30 degrees is nice cool weather; Recently, a heat wave caused the temperature to reach around 52 degrees in full sun, and here in Chile, in the city where I live, they forecast "high temperatures" that will reach 24 degrees Celsius :)
But so far, everything has been fine because, despite the fact that many complain about the heat, I haven't felt anything out of the ordinary.
Yes, heat has always been one of the biggest killers of humans. In 2021 a heat wave killed thousands of people here in my province of BC. It reached new record temperatures of 50C (Canada's previous record was 45C). Our vegetation is not used to such conditions, and literally burst into flames, destroying large areas and many houses/businesses/crops/animals. This far North, we have seasons, and all live revolves around this timing. A single day of snow in the middle of summer would kill many crops and livestock. A single day of intense heat in the middle of winter would do the same thing. So a 30 degree heat wave at the beginning of Spring (the end of Winter) is going to burn up my garden, and many nearby food crops. In the middle of summer, 30 degrees is just a regular day here, but in May it means disasters for plants and animals.
I guess we will see what kind of outcome I achieve here! I have never tried growing food this far North. I would enjoy trading produce with another gardener, although most of my crops will be small, because I haven't yet expanded my garden to the full size I intend. I have 6 months before the snow returns and it will be -30C again. : )
