After a day out in the backcountry south of Kingman, Arizona we decided to try a cool looking retro diner located in the historic old part of Kingman.
According to the Kingman tourism site the present diner started life as a gas station/Cafe back in the 1950s and the retro vibe is alive and well and in abundant display once you step inside (including Elvis in a pink sequined jacket watching over the counter section).
I picked out a couple of entrees to go - a chili dog smothered in nice thick chili, chopped onions and gooey shredded cheese accompanied by some plump onion rings and crisp dill pickle spear (actually we shared this meal with Lulu)
My eye was drawn to the listing of a chile burger and nothing is more delectable to me than a good old green chile cheeseburger. It arrived snugly wrapped in paper with it's accompanying onion rings and pickle 🥒 as well as homemade BBQ sauce on the side.
The rings were just a touch too browned for me but still were tasty and crisp and the burger was classic green chile goodness with the innards bursting out from between the buns. This one was different from most I have had back in New Mexico in that the grilled chiles were whole cut chiles instead of the more frequent chopped up chiles.
A belly-filling meal that left us happy and (unfortunately) to full to order one of the milk shakes that they're famous for.
Definitely a bunch of diner calories but it was a great stop with great service as well.
Hopefully we'll leave room for a shake next time we pass through Kingman.
It's hard to find good food in Arizona. I think it has something to do with the water.
