Making Cassava Suman

This is the cassava we have harvested in our farm and this is what a suman made of. Cassava suman is a native Filipino rice cake (kakanin) that is comprised of grated cassava, brown sugar, and coconut cream. The mixture is wrapped and sealed individually using banana leaves.

We peeled and grated the cassava. We squeezed it properly to remove the toxins until it became drier.

Gathered around a wooden table, my friends and I embarked on a delightful culinary adventure, crafting cassava suman. As laughter filled the air, we peeled and grated fresh cassava, relishing in the tactile experience. With meticulous care, we blended the cassava with coconut milk and sugar, infusing the mixture with a hint of nostalgia and tradition. Each of us took turns wrapping the sticky dough in banana leaves, shaping them into perfect bundles. As the suman steamed to perfection, the anticipation grew palpable, heightening our excitement.

And these are our finished grated cassava wraps. We put it in the pot and is ready to cook.

Finally, as we unwrapped the warm parcels, a sense of accomplishment enveloped us, accompanied by the irresistible aroma of our homemade delicacy. Sharing bites of our labor of love, we savored not just the flavors, but the camaraderie and joy of creating something beautiful together.
