The Venice Carnival is known all over the world.

Fantastic masks that reflect characters from the Italian Renaissance and the Middle Ages give an idea of its antiquity.

Some sources even claim that the first Venetian carnivals began in 1162, although some scholars put it a century later.

The Bauta, the Gnaga, the Moretta, are masks today recognized worldwide that in ancient times allowed the nobles to maintain their anonymity in situations of transgression.

Although the costumes and masks that seem to come out of a painting have made the turn of the world and have a spectacularity that is hardly comparable to any other in its style, it is not less important the aspect prior to the organization of the festival.

In these photos I want to show you what the Grand Canal of Venice looks like when the preparations for the multitudinous carnival begin.

The illumination of the canal during the night hours and the boats of the river police and emergency services that constantly patrol the canals give it a surreal look.

In Venice, the popular festival was unleashed on the last night of Carnival: St. Mark's Square was filled with thousands of masks dancing with flaming torches, the city was illuminated and a huge mannequin in the shape of Pantalone was burnt.

This celebration represented the end or funeral (as they called it) of the Carnival, and the people chanted "El va! El va! El va!" and with the slow tolling of the bells the period of Lent began.
