Greetings Everyone! This morning my Uncle Boy harvested Peanut.
Peanuts are harvested in autumn, during the months of September, October, and even into November. Unlike many plants, a peanut plant flowers above the ground but fruits below it. This growing cycle takes somewhere between three and four months, during which the plant grows to be about 18 inches in height.
Harvesting peanuts is a relatively easy process, although it does require some specific steps. Timing is key when it comes to harvesting peanuts. Peanuts are typically ready for harvest around 90-120 days after planting, depending on the variety. If the pods are yellow and the leaves are dry, it’s time to start harvesting.
When the peanuts are ready to be harvested, peanut farmers must loosen the plants and lift them from the earth’s soil. This process is completed using a “digger,” which severs the root and picks the plant away from the ground.
Use a soil bolo or rake to loosen the soil around the peanut plant and carefully dig out the plant. Gently shake the plant to remove the dirt, then use a garden fork to separate the pods from the vines. Place the peanuts into a basket or bag and take them indoors to dry before storing or shelling. With a little bit of know-how and some patience, you can successfully harvest your own peanuts.
In this part Ate Babie and Obet haul the peanuts and gather them together to remove the peanuts from the roots.
