Nordstream1, the gas pipeline from Russia to Germany that goes under the Baltic Sea, has been shut for ten days for annual maintenance.
It's due to re-open on 21st July, but the EU fears that Russia will find an excuse not to re-open it.
What's more likely is that Russia does re-open it, because it doesn't want to be accused of a blatant act of war, but then sends only a fraction of gas through the pipeline, with excuses about broken turbines etc as to why they can't send the full contractual amount.
The end result will be the same: those EU countries that depend on Russian gas are going to have a shortfall, and will have to start rationing.
When they write the history books on how the EU came to be so dependant on Russia, this picture will figure largely:
