June 12, noted as democracy day in Nigeria will always be a day that will be ceremonial on annual basis. There is still an interesting argument as to whether we are truly democratic or not. Some say democracy has lost its footing in our electoral process.
From the moment we gained the status of a democratic state, many people who experienced the harsh reality of military rule believed that greatness was on the horizon for their beloved country. They expected Nigeria to follow in the footstep of some great names and soar high in several areas.
We got the status of a democratic state in 1999 and it's already 2022. A genuine assessment of what is supposed to be a progressive record for us will surely show that things haven't exactly turned out the way many people expected. Little wonder why there are feelings of dejection expressed by those in the know whenever they compare their expectations for the country with the sad reality we are all facing.
A democratic state has some core features like Independence of the judiciary, rule of law, Civil liberties, conducting of a free and fair election, etc.
Every democratic state surely has some loophole in their system, but ours seems to be a massive failure. The apex of it can be seen in our electoral process.
The lack of transparency in the election done across all tiers of government is creating room for more distrust in the process and the ripple effect leads to political apathy.
Even those that turn up to be part of electoral processes are negligently allowing themselves to be used, discarded and replaced. I've been part of a political party in a gubernatorial election and I can assure you that everything I'm saying about this is the fact. If things continue this way, regardless of the number of democracy days we celebrate, the tragic cycle will keep on resetting.
Surely, history won't be kind to many big names we are hearing at the moment.

We are only bearing the name "democracy" without doing the needful. The system has been a massive failure since I was born into Nigeria 🤩and the electoral department seems to be the worst.
However, what God cannot do does not exist! At this point, I only look unto God for Nigerians...my prayers for my dear country daily🙏
Yeah. We've been believing that things will be just fine, but it keeps getting worse. It's sad and demoralizing to compare our growth and development with that of other decent countries. Nonetheless, we can try to maintain a good lifestyle individually and also make our family a safe haven.
When the time is right, God's grace will decend on Nigeria.
