Today is the day of Teacher's Day!
Teachers’ Day is a special day to thank and remember the teachers who have shaped us and show our appreciation for them.
World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education. World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.
World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).
Teacher’s Day is a special day for the appreciation of teachers, and may include celebrations to honor them for their special contributions in a particular field area, or the community tone in education. This is the primary reason why countries celebrate this day on different dates, unlike many other International Days. For example, Argentina has commemorated Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's death on 11 September as Teachers' Day since 1915.[1] In India the birthday of the second president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, 5 September, is celebrated as Teacher’s Day since 1962.
After our parents, it is the teacher who inculcates good values and wisdom into our lives. They play a very important role in every student's life. Words are not enough to express our gratitude to our teachers, therefore we dedicate 5th of September to all our beloved teachers who have taught us something about life and helped us to become a better individuals. After finishing our high school and college, we tend to somehow forget our revered teachers who have been the building blocks of where we are today. So on this day, let us remember all our mentors and teachers and send them a gratitude message for playing such an important role in our lives.
Being a teacher provides the unique opportunity to make a transformative and lasting impact on the lives of others, contributing to shaping sustainable futures and offering personal fulfilment. However, the world faces an unprecedented global teacher shortage exacerbated by a decline in their working conditions and status.
With the theme "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage", the 2023 celebrations will aim to put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase that number at the top of the global agenda. Through various activities, they will advocate for a dignified and valued teaching profession, analyse their challenges, and showcase inspiring practices to attract, retain and motivate teachers and educators. It will also examine the ways in which education systems, societies, communities, and families recognise, appreciate, and actively support teachers.
We are nothing without our guru or teacher, annually October 5 is celebrated as World Teachers’ Day to celebrate the dedicated and tireless efforts of our teachers to form our bright future and guide us to the right path. Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future and imparting knowledge, values, and skills to generations. October 5, 2023, is a special day this year to share your love and gratitude to the teachers who have played a big role in shaping your bright career or life.
