To speak of Isabel Allende in the Hispanic literary universe seems redundant. The Chilean writer (who was actually born in Peru since her father -brother cousin of former president Salvador Allende- was at that time developing his work in that country, she also has U.S. nationality and her ancestry is Spanish-Portuguese to complete an incredible range of diverse origins and nationalities, she rose to international fame with her book The House of the Spirits published in 1981, her letter novel in order of appearance.
Today I want to share with this literary community that brings together so many #blurtians of the platform that allows us to share, daily, our content.
I am referring to Maya's Notebook published in 2011, in full artistic and literary maturity of the writer, considered by many literary critics as the third most important work in the literary production of Isabel Allende, after the aforementioned The House of the Spirits and Paula -autobiographical novel- written in 1994.
Most of the specialized critics consider Isabel Allende to be the most widely read living writer in the literary universe of the Spanish-speaking world.

Hablar de Isabel Allende en el universo literario hispano parece redundante. La escritora chilena (que en realidad nació en Perú ya que su padre -primo hermano del ex-presidente Salvador Allende- se encontraba en ese momento desarrollando sus tareas en aquél país, tiene además la nacionalidad estadounidense y su ascendencia es hispano-portuguesa para completar un increíble de orígenes y nacionalidades diversas, saltó a la fama internacional con su libro La Casa de los Espíritus publicada en el año 1981, su carta novela en orden de aparición.
Hoy quiero compartir con esta comunidad literaria que agrupa a tantos #blurtians de la plataforma que nos permite comparitr, a diario, nuestros contenidos.
Me estoy refiriendo a El Cuaderno de Maya publicada en el año 2011, en plena madurez artística y literaria de la escritora, considerada por gran parte de la crítica literaria como la tercera obra más importante en la producción literaria de Isabel Allende, después de la mencionada La Casa de los Espíritus y de Paula - novela autobiográfica-escrita en 1994.
Gran parte de la crítica especializada considera a Isabel Allende como la escritora viva más leída en el universo literario de los contenidos en habla hispana.
The main protagonist Maya Vidal, whose name Isabel Allende uses to give the title to the novel, is a teenager who has fallen into the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs, and who manages to escape from the U.S., specifically from the slums of Las Vegas, which we rarely see in movies, social networks and other media concerned with showing the "clean" face of American society. In an environment totally different from the one he had lived in until that moment, constituted by a simple life strengthened by the cult of true human values based on relationships and mutual respect, where the incredible beauty of a sunset with the red fire of the sun that ends its daily cycle or the first lights of dawn on the sea horizon can be appreciated.
In these desolate but authentic lands (or islands) Maya will find herself again, she will definitively forget her old hatreds, grudges and vices to become a different, new person, forever far away from marginality, moral degradation, loneliness and bad company.
Sent to Chiloé by her grandmother - her grandfather had passed away - the isolation of Chiloé is an excellent opportunity to restart a life, up to that moment, marked by a continuous turbulent journey.
Chiloé is far from the tourist routes -in the novel-, it is an isolated land and has no economic interest other than that aroused by the local fishermen, but it has the authenticity and purity necessary to make her rise from the ashes in which her relationships with the shady characters of the Las Vegas slums where she had spent an agitated adolescence had plunged her.
A sad story in a way, but sobering in a way, where she shows, as Isabel Allende always does with singular mastery, the complex universe of human relationships.
The death of her grandfather, the only family link that kept her tied to the world of family affections, marks her by fire and shows her a new path to follow where she can only count on herself.
A dark past and a present that, although not fully luminous, allows her to glimpse a faint light at the end of the road where she will finally find the longed-for peace, serenity and love.
La protagonista principal Maya Vidal, de cuyo nombre se sirve Isabel Allende para dar el título a la novela, es una adolescente que ha caído en el uso y abuso del alcohol y las drogas, y que consigue escapar de los EE. UU, concretamente de los barrios miserables -que pocas veces vemos en las películas, redes sociales y demás medios de difusión preocupados por mostrar la cara "limpia" de la sociedad estadounidense- de Las Vegas y, huyendo de los traficantes que la persiguen y los agentes del FBI que persiguen a ambos, aterriza luego de varias peripecias en un lugar del mundo tan aislado como puro e incontaminado: el archipiélago chileno de Chiloé.
En un ambiente totalmente distinto al que había vivido hasta ese momento, constituído por una vida sencilla fortalecida por el culto de los verdaderos valores humanos basados en las relaciones y el respeto mutuo, donde se aprecia la increíble belleza de un atardecer con el rojo fuego del sol que termina su ciclo diario o las primeras luces del alba en el horizonte marino.
En estas tierras (o islas) en cierto modo desoladas pero auténticas Maya se reencontrará a sí misma, olvidará definitivamente sus viejos odios, rencores y vicios para transformarse en una persona distinta, nueva., alejada para siempre de la marginalidad, la degradación moral, la soledad y las malas compañias.
Enviada a Chiloé por su abuela -su abuelo había fallecido- el aislamiento de Chiloé es una excelente oportunidad para recomenzar una vida, hasta ese momento, señalada por un continuo andar turbulento.
Chiloé está lejos de las rutas turísticas -en la novela-, es una tierra aislada y no tiene mayor interés económico que el que despiertan los pescadores locales pero tiene la autenticidad y la pureza necesaria para hacerla resurgir de las cenizas en las que la habían sumido sus relaciones con los oscuros personajes de los barrios marginales de Las Vegas donde había transcurrido una agitada adolescencia.
Una historia triste en un cierto modo pero aleccionadora por tro, donde muestra como siempre lo hace Isabel Allende con singular maestría, el complejo universo de las relaciones humanas.
La muerte de su abuelo, único vínculo familiar que la mantenía ligada al mundon de los afectos familiares la marca a fuego y le señla un nuevo camino a seguir donde solo podrá contar con sí misma.
Un oscuro pasado y un presente que si bien no es plenamente luminoso le permite avizorar una tenue luz al final del camino donde finalmente encontrará la paz tanto deseada, la serenidad y también el amor.
In Isabel Allende's novels the protagonists are (almost) always women, as in this case, often submerged in a myriad of problems as Maya, rebellious, non-conformist, independent.
As the writer herself has stated on more than one occasion, the book is a response to the request of her grandchildren who, feeling their grandmother's stories being told from one country to another, wanted to feel identified literarily, a book dedicated to them. But also a book that any teenager in the world could identify with, whatever their nationality or place of birth.
Maya's Notebook is an old story of abuse and a new story of hope.
With themes that are already classics in Isabel Allende's repertoire: the unwanted exile, the return to the land of our ancestors, the constant struggle to fulfill oneself, to overcome one's own defects and to confront others, one's own will and an indomitable character as the only possible ways to reach one's own happiness.
En las novelas de Isabel Allende las protagonistas son (casi) siempre mujeres, como en este caso, sumergidas muchas veces en un sinfín de problemas como Maya, rebeldes, anticonformistas, independientes.
Como la misma escritora lo ha declarado en más de una oportunidada, el libro es una respuesta al pedido de sus nietos que al sentir contar las historias de su abuela de un país a otro, querían sentirse identificados literariamente, un libro a ellos dedicado. Pero también un libro con el que pudiera identificarse cualquier adolescente del mundo, cualesquiera fue nacionalidad o lugar de nacimiento.
El Cuaderno de Maya es una historia vieja de abusos y una historia nueva de esperanza.
Con temas que son ya clásicos en el repertorio de Isabel Allende: el exilio no querido, el retorno a la tierra de nuestros ancestros, la lucha constante tratando de realizarse, superar sus propios defectos y confrontarse con los demás, la propia voluntad y un carácter indómito como las únicas vias posibles para alcanzar la propia felicidad.
