When we talk about horror or horror stories, we are accustomed to point out the name of Stephen King as one of the most prolific and renowned writers of this type of novels of all times.
However, there are currently (and there have been in the past) writers of a remarkable literary scope who for various reasons have not transcended the threshold of what today we naturally call "best sellers" as they should.
Perhaps we immediately remember the great Edgar Allan Poe, but in more or less modern times there have been other writers who knew how to pick up the gauntlet and leave a stupendous legacy for posterity in literary matters.
I have been particularly fond of the stories of two of them: H.P. Lovecraft (whom I will tell you about in the future) and Richard Matheson.
Cuando se habla de relatos de terror u horror estamos habituados a señalar el nombre de Stephen King como uno de los más prolíficos y renombrados escritores de este tipo de novelas de todos los tiempos.
Sin embargo hay en la actualidad (y ha habido en el pasado) escritores de una notable envergadura literaria que por variados motivos no han trascendido como debieran el umbral de los que hoy llamamos con naturalidad "best sellers".

Particularmente me he aficcionado bastantante a los relatos de dos de ellos: H.P. Lovecraft (de quien les voy a hablar en el futuro) y Richard Matheson.
And today I want to share with all the members of this beloved community, one of his most successful novels: Hell House, to such an extent that Stepken King himself defined it as "the most terrifying novel about a haunted house ever written".
The novel presents some points of correspondence with another masterpiece of the fifties: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, although unlike that one and adapted to more modern times, it presents a greater sexual and violent implication.
Y propio de este último hoy quiero compartir con todos los miembros de esta querida comunidad, una de sus novelas más logradas: La Casa Infernal, a punto tal que el mismo Stepken King la definió testualmente como «la más aterrorizante novela sobre una casa embrujada jamás escrita».
La novela presenta algunos puntos de correspondencia otra obra maestra de los años cincuenta: The Haunting of Hill House de Shirley Jackson, aunque a diferencia de aquélla y adaptándose a tiempos más modernos presenta una mayor implicancia sexual y de violencia.
The remarkable thing about the plot (among other things) is the extremely reduced number of characters: only four, each one with their own characteristics and a not so enviable past.
On the one hand, Dr. Lionel Barrett, a physicist interested in parapsychology, his wife Edith and two mediums, one a mentalist (Florence Tanner) and the other a physicist (Benjamin Franklin Fischer).
The condition imposed on them by a dying millionaire, William Reinhardt Deutsch, is that they must enter and stay in a sinister house called Belasco House located in Maine (a "must" place where most of Stephen King's novels, himself an inhabitant of that region of the USA, are set) in order to prove that there is life behind death.
So far, the subject does not provoke much curiosity. But the house (Hell House" is considered the most haunted of the same, bearing the name inherited from its initial owner Emeric Belasco who would have committed countless acts of blasphemy, perversion and sadism inside it.
To add a note of mystery to the supernatural terror, one of the mediums is the only survivor of a similar experience attempted thirty years earlier.
Little by little the true character of the characters emerges. On the one hand the psychological struggle between the physicist who, based on his scientific training, despises the work of the mediums.
On the other hand Edith, his wife, highly influenced by everything paranormal.
And finally the struggle between the two mediums trying to impose their theories, achieving together, in the end, to fulfill the mission of what the destructive power of the infernal house intends: to corrupt the spirit and the ideas of the people who enter it until their total physical and mental destruction.

Lo notable de la trama (entre otras cosas) es la cantidad extremadamente reducida de personajes: solo cuatro, cada uno con características propias y un pasado no cierto envidiable.
Por un lado el doctor Lionel Barrett, físico interesado en la parapsicología, su esposa Edith y dos médiums uno mentalista (Florence Tanner) y el otro físico (Benjamin Franklin Fischer).
La condición que les ha impuesto un millonario moribundo, William Reinhardt Deutsch, es que deben entrar y permanecer en una casa siniestra llamada Casa Belasco situada en el Maine (lugar "obligado" donde se desarrollan la mayor parte de las novelas de Stephen King, habitante él mismo en esa región de los EE. UU.) a los efectos de demostrar que existe vida detrás de la muerte.
Hasta ahí el tema no provoca mayor curiosidad. Pero la casa (Hell House" es considerada la más embrujada del mismo, lleva ese nombre heredado de su propietario inicial Emeric Belasco quien habría cometido en el interior de la misma innumerables actos de blasfemia, perversión y sadismo.
Para agregar una nota de misterio al terror sobrenatural uno de los mediums es el único sobreviviente de una experiencia similar intentada treinta años atrás.
De a poco va emergiendo el verdadero carácter de los personajes. Por un lado la lucha psicológica entre el físico que apoyándose en su formación científica desprecia la labor de los mediums.
Por otro lado Edith, su esposa, sumamente influenciable por todo lo paranormal.
Y finalmente la lucha de los dos mediums entre si tratando de imponer sus teorías logrando entre todos, al final, cumplir el cometido de lo que la potencia destructiva de la casa infernal se propone: corromper el espíritu y las ideas de las personas que entran en ella hasta lograr su destrucción física y mental total.
Perhaps Matheson's best achievement has been to create such a sinister and at the same time distressing atmosphere as the pages of the book turn. The days, as the hours go by, become unbearable for the four inhabitants of the house.
If we were talking about music, I would say that we are in the presence of a continuous crescendo, a kind of Ravel's Bolero of terror to exemplify the plot in a very simple way.
Where an atmosphere is created similar to the clockwork of a bomb: you know it is going to explode but you do not know when. Everyone defends their theory, some with sarcasm, others with vehemence and the rest with real fear.
Because no one feels safe.

Tal vez lo mejor de Matheson haya sido lograr un ambiente tan siniestro y a la vez tan angustiante a medida que van pasando las páginas del libro. Los días a medida que van pasando las horas se van transformando en algo insoportable para los cuatro habitante de la casa.
Si habláramos de música diría que estamos en presencia de un continuo crescendo, una especie de Bolero de Ravel del terror para ejemplificar la trama en un modo muy sencillo.
Donde se va creando un ambiente similar al sistema de relojería de una bomba: se sabe que va a explotar pero no se sabe cuando. Todos defienden su teoría, algunos con sarcasmo, otros con vehemencia y el resto con verdadero miedo.
Porque ninguno se siente al seguro.
