Book Reviews: The Hornet's Nest and new characters by Patricia Cornwell.

There are writers who create a character in their own image and likeness. And then he is immortalized in the cinema with consecrated performances. A sort of literary “alter ego” first and then cinematographic.

This is the case of Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster who give life to Hannibal Lector and Clarice Starling, the characters of the novel by Thomas Harris, author of the series of suspense novels whose protagonist is the cannibal psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, adapted to the cinema in five films and a television series.

Or Denzel Washington who, together with Angelina Jolie, plays the central roles of the quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme and the police officer (later his assistant) Amelia Sachs in The Bone Collector, the famous novel by Jeffery Deaver.

And the examples could go on. Today I want to share with all my literary #blurtians friends another similar character from the pen of writer Patricia Cornell. It is about the detective-anatomopathologist Kay Scarpetta and she is usually helped in her investigations by detective Pete Marino, and by her niece Lucy Farinelli.

Besides this character, already a classic in detective literature, he has created other characters. Like Andy Brazil & Judy Hammer. Of them, less known, I want to comment today a book that has them as main characters.

Andy Brazil is a young reporter. Virginia West is an energetic policewoman in her forties. In the small town of Charlotte, relations between the citizens and the police are not the best.

So why not pair the young reporter with the determined Virginia? The two of them face together, with a relationship that at first is not the most peaceful, a serial killer who spray paints his victims.

Not only crimes are investigated, but also the miseries of human nature in the daily struggle for survival.

Certainly not one of Patricia Cornwell's best thrillers, it has an interesting plot, but at times a dull exposition. In The Hornet's Nest we find another female protagonist much loved by Patricia Cornwell, Virginia West, the deputy chief of police who is over 40 years old, while the male protagonist is a journalist/aspiring cop named Andy Brazil, a young man of about 23 years.

The setting is the city of Charlotte. A series of murders are committed regularly in the city's hot summer. The killer robs his victims, all lonely and indisputably successful men, and after shooting them in the head, draws, almost as a disfigurement, an hourglass with spray paint on their private parts. The plot, which was interesting, continues in a very boring flat tone, ideal for inducing sleep... and the ending is non-existent....

Where has the genius of the author of Post Mortem gone? maybe! as I often say, success is sometimes fatal to authors who think they can write calmly and have the favor of readers, but it is not so, readers always look at the reality of the book and the reality of The Hornet's Nest is that Patricia Corwell could do better!

Hay escritores que crean un personajes a su imagen y semejanza. Y después es inmortalado en el cinema con actuaciones consagratorias. Una especie de "alter ego" literario primero y cinematográfico después.

Es el caso de Anthony Hopkins y Jodie Foster que dan vida a Hannibal Lector y Clarice Starling, los personajes de la novela de Thomas Harris, autor de la serie de novelas de suspenso cuyo protagonista es el psiquiatra caníbal Hannibal Lecter, adaptadas al cine en cinco películas y una serie de televisión.

O de Denzel Washington que junto a Angelina Jolie protagonizan los roles centrales encarnando al detective tetraplejicoi Lincoln Rhyme y al agente de policía (luego su asistente) Amelia Sachs en el Coleccionista de Huesos la famosa novela de Jeffery Deaver.

Y los ejemplos podrían seguir. Hoy quiero compartir con todos los amigos #blurtians literarios otro personaje similar salido de la pluma de la escritora Patricia Cornell. Se trata de la detective-anatomopatóloga Kay Scarpetta y generalmente es ayudada en sus pesquisas por el detective Pete Marino, y por su sobrina Lucy Farinelli.

Que aparte de este personaje, un clásico ya en la literatura policial, ha creado otros personajes. Como Andy Brazil & Judy Hammer. De ellos, menos conocidos, les quiero comentar hoy un libro que los tiene como protagonistas principales.

Andy Brasil es un joven reportero. Virginia West es una enérgica mujer policía de cuarenta años. En el pequeño pueblo de Charlotte, las relaciones entre los ciudadanos y la policía no son las mejores.

Entonces, ¿por qué no emparejar al joven reportero con la decidida Virginia? Los dos se enfrentan juntos, con una relación que al principio no es la más pacífica, a un asesino en serie que pinta con spray a sus víctimas.

No sólo se investigan los delitos, sino también las miserias de la naturaleza humana en la lucha diaria por la supervivencia.

Ciertamente no es uno de los mejores thrillers de Patricia Cornwell, tiene una trama interesante, pero a veces una exposición aburrida. En El avispero encontramos a otra protagonista femenina muy querida por Patricia Cornwell, Virginia West, la subjefa de policía que tiene más de 40 años, mientras que el protagonista masculino Es un periodista/aspirante a policía llamado Andy Brazil, un joven de unos 23 años.

El lugar es la ciudad de Charlotte. Una serie de asesinatos se cometen regularmente en el caluroso verano de la ciudad. El asesino roba a sus víctimas, todos hombres solitarios y de indiscutible éxito, y después de matarlas de un tiro en la cabeza, les dibuja, casi como una desfiguración, un reloj de arena con pintura en aerosol en sus partes íntimas. La trama, que era interesante, continúa en un tono plano muy aburrido, ideal para inducir el sueño... y el final es inexistente...

¿Dónde se ha ido la genialidad del autor de Post Mortem? ¡tal vez! como suelo decir, el éxito a veces es fatal para los autores que creen que pueden escribir con calma y tener el favor de los lectores, pero no es así, los lectores siempre miran la realidad del libro y la realidad de El avispero es que Patricia ¡Cornwell podría hacerlo mejor!
