Review: The Turn Of The Key By Ruth Ware

in bookreview •  3 years ago

I have not read any mystery/horror stories recently because of a busy lifestyle, offline and online. So I came across this book recommended by a friend. I was immediately gripped by the synopsis and factored in at least 1-2 hours every night after the day's work to devour it. After a week, I can tell you that the 337 pages novel was worth reading though it meant less sleeping time for me!

The Turn Of The Key is a chilling ghost story about a young lady, Rowan Caine, who took up a job as a live-in nanny in a 'too-perfect' Victorian house with a garden full of poisonous flowers, not knowing it was haunted and she was stepping into a nightmare.

Her struggle to handle her job led to a dead child and she was arrested for the murder. While in prison awaiting trial, she writes to her attorney narrating the events that led to her predicament and every detail pertinent to her case.

The intrigue of this story was discovering who murdered the child even though all evidence pointed to Rowan.

Review

This author's work kept me on the edge of my seat as I was intrigued by the clever plot twists. Basically if you love mystery/horror, then this book is for you. What's a horror story without a haunted house or old goulish cabin in it, eh?

I enjoyed how the author opened and closed the novel with letters between the main character and her attorney. It added an element of mystery to the story which a reader would be keen to get to the bottom of it. The author delivered on Rowan's character but what I could not stomach was the behaviour of the parents who had this nonchalant attitude towards their spoilt, disrespectful children.

As I read the book, the gothic elements in the story like the creaking floors, ghost stories, smart tech devices misbehaving mysteriously were disturbingly riveting yet captivating.

Overall, this book is not bad. This is the first of this author's books that I have read and I'll say she did an excellent job of holding her readers' attention. This book will definitely make a fantastic gothic film in my opinion. I'll rate it a 4 stars out of 5.
