It's the Day 3 of our final year brethren week and it is tagged "Jersey Day". It is a tradition whereby all the FYB students put on the Jersey of the club or the sport they support.
Jersey Day is typically a light-hearted activity on one of the days of the Final Year Brethren Week. On this day, FYB students are encouraged to wear their favorite sports jersey, whether it's from a professional team or their local school's team. Students also bring noisemakers, speakers, and other items to cheer on their coursemates who are involved in one sport or the other. The day is meant for fun and relaxation, and it's a great way to celebrate one's final days in school. Overall, Jersey Day is meant to be a fun and festive way to celebrate with one's friends.
Jersey Day usually starts with a pep rally where students can show off their jerseys and cheer their coursemates. Then, students have a special lunch period where they continue to celebrate, or they may have a free period where they can just relax and enjoy themselves. The last one I witnessed, the FYB students then had inter-faculty activities, such as a football tournament and volleyball, some track events, and some funny games for the female students where they competed in their jerseys. These activities were really fun to witness and I couldn't stop my step for cheering those involved in each game. My faculty won most of the competitions last year, I guess that's because of our population. We have the highest population on campus.
I was tired from the activities from the previous day so, I couldn't get up early to prepare for the activity of the day. It was almost noon before I managed to get out of bed. As I got up, after saying my prayers, I dragged myself to the bathroom to freshen up and prepare for the day. I wore my clothes; a red colored armless Jersey over a black sleeve turtle neck top, a black pair of jeans trousers, a white pair of sneakers with red lace, a red bag, and a red shade to go with it. You love the combination right? I love it too. The combination was inspired by the Teddy Bear a friend got for me on my last birthday. I don't like teddy bears as such but I couldn't reject it since it was a gift, that would be disrespectful. I had to accept it.
On my way to school, I saw many students on Jersey walking towards the gates and some to their hotels and that got me wondering why. I approached one of them to ask if the activity of the day was over, but she responded that the parade just ended and the game competition was about to start at the school sports complex. I have missed out a lot on the day's activity. The parade is one of the most fun parts of Jersey Day. I wish I hadn't slept for that long but it is not over, I said to myself, Let's go and enjoy the rest of the day.
At the sports complex, I could still see signs of the parade, FYB students from different departments and faculty were carrying signs with slogans and messages. For example, a lady from. my department was carrying a placard with " Esa leads, others follow" boldly written on it. The trumpeter and brigadier were still playing the sound too and students were dancing and singing.
After a little while, The games began. As usual, it was faculty-based games and contests. The first game we had was the football finals. We won it on the score of 4 goals to 1 goal from the opponent, the faculty of Art and Social science. The next game was a relay race. I was part of the runners, we also won the race. I finished second position while the other person from my department finished first. After the race, other games followed, and as usual my faculty won most of the games. We have the highest population advantage on campus. Aside from sports, we usually win any other contest on campus and that has been the tradition even before I gained admission into the school.
There were lots of food than the previous day. We had a lot to drink and eat, courtesy of Dr Nelson, Dean, Faculty of Languages. There were lots of food like pizza, Snacks, hot dogs, jollof rice, grilled chicken, and drinks such as soda drinks, and energy drinks. The Lecturers and the students all have fun and celebrate together. We brought back the medal and cups home. Our lecturers were more than happy and proud to receive the certificate of honor again. They all danced and celebrate with us.
Watch out for Day 4
