The first day of Final Year Brethren Week was a whirlwind of activity, but it was only the beginning. The experience here lately has been great and fun. Unlike the previous weeks that was full of stress, this week is filled with fun and merriment. Against the odds of the ongoing strike- the National Labour Congress strike in the country, FYB celebration in my school continues.
Yesterday, 14th of November was the Second day of the FYB week in my school. The major tradition attached to Day 2 is "Back to School" and "Career Day" but there are other activities such as costume, gender switch, and so on. Day 2 came with a lot of exciting experience. Though the first day came with its own excitement, the second day was more fun.
The first event of the day was "Back to school". It is a kind of tradition where FYB students or any student per se go back in memory lane and dress in the uniform of their secondary/primary school just to bring back the innocent experience. Most of the students in my department went for the back-to-school attire. They were all dressed in school uniforms like the school girls and boys in secondary school. Different colors of the school uniforms students made the event more colorful.
I wasn't left out in the event too. I dress in my secondary school uniform which is a white shirt, a blue and white checkered pleated skirt, and a pair of white sneakers. I didn't forget to take my water bottle, food flask, and snacks, all packed in my lunch box just like the good old days of Rhema Citadel College. I was the assistant senior prefect girl when I was in secondary school, so I took up my prefect position today as my tag was beautifully placed on my chest beside the left button. It was great to feel young again after the realities of life had made us adults. How I wish the feeling could continue but it is what it is, growth is a necessity. One has to grow up physically, academically, financially, and in other aspects of life.
Also, just like me, Students assume the different positions they held when they were in secondary school. This can be seen in their uniforms. Some have tags on their clothes displaying their names and positions. As some portrayed positive characters, Some decided to bring back their old bad attitudes such as lateness to school, stubbornness, indecent dressing, and the like just to make the experience fun and authentic.
Back to School activities opened at 9 am with assembly. It was observed just like the old school period. It started with Songs of Praises, then to prayer, followed by the recitation of the National Anthem and pledge. After that, the student who impersonated the principal made the announcement. We then matched to our various classes in a single file singing school rhymes. The experience was heavenly.
The next event of the day was Career time. It was all about work and professionalism. The first activity in this segment is the career fair, where students meet with professionals from different fields who have been invited and learn about the different professions and job opportunities. It was also like networking events, where we had the chance to mingle with professionals in our field. We made connections, shared our goals, and learned about the career paths of others.
After the Career fair, we proceeded to the workshop initiated by a group of professionals. This workshop focused on professional communication and networking. We were taught how to make a good first impression, how to introduce ourselves in a professional setting, and how to build relationships with others on the field.
After the workshop, We were served small chops and Soda drinks for lunch. Over lunch, student have conversations in groups sharing their experiences from the morning. A few minutes later, we had another session on job searching and resume writing, we were taught how to create a strong resume and cover letter, and how to search for jobs online. That's a good preparation for the future, I guess. I have read about smart and intelligent people who find it difficult to get a job after school because of their outdated or not-so-good resumes or Curriculum Vitae (CV).
Another workshop kicked off after the Job searching and resume writing session. This workshop was about personal development and growth. The instructor, Prof Richmond started with "Time Management", where he taught us how to prioritize our tasks and make the most of our time. Then, he proceeded to "Stress Management" where he taught us the techniques for dealing with the pressures of life and work.
Lastly in this segment, We were taught how to set our goals and track our progress. He said our goal must be"SMART", an acronym for Simple, Measurable, Accurate, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Before we proceeded to the next activity, we were given some time to relax and recharge. During this break, students started taking pictures and displaying childlike attitudes just for fun. Those who dressed in a particular way peculiar to a particular profession also displayed the characteristics of such a profession. I Could see students in nurse's dresses, doctor's overalls with stethoscopes hanging around their necks, Police uniforms, army uniforms, Engineers' Coat with hard hats or helmets on their heads, and suits like bankers, Teachers, Tech experts, Marketers e.t.c

We converge in the hall after the break for other activities of the day. The first in this segment was the costume. Since it is similar to Career, we did not spend much time on it. A lecturer from my department, Dr Lawrence took a lecture on Costume and how it should be utilized in some fields where they are needed. He speaks mainly on performing theater and arts and the importance of costume in that field. This segment was more fun than the previous workshop, that was because it was more relatable since the topic was one of the aspects of the courses we have had in the past.
The formal activities of the day ended around 3 pm. Then, the merriment and celebration began fully. Students danced and sang rhymes around the school premises with the Brigadier and
Trumpeter playing sounds. After the dance, we gathered in the school sports complex to have photo shoots and video coverage and also play old-time games such as That Cinderella Dress in Yellow, Ten-Ten, I Call on....., Soccer games, and Scrabble.
Lastly, we had the last item on the program of the day. The refreshment was packed like the school kids lunch. Each pack contains sweets, bubble gum, Sausage rolls, energy drink and a bottled water.
Watch out for Day 3
