Odenigbo is traveling to meet Rufus at the dockyard in Lagos. He is the only one who can read English language in the whole of Mangu. But when the white men where going back to the coast of Lagos from their trade trip at Mangu, they took Rufus with them. Mazi Nwabuko agreed that his son, Rufus leaves with the white men.
Three years after he had gone to live with the white men as a house-help in Lagos, he came back one December to spend the yultide at his home country and bought a Railey bicycle. At that point, he became the most influential personality in the whole of Mangu. Everyone came to Mazi Nwabuko's compound to take a look at the silver coloured bike. It was the first in the whole of the region.
It was this recorded success that made Odenigbo take the bold step to travel to Lagos uninvited. He has made up his mind to find Rufus. His name wasn't originally Rufus, but because the white men could not pronounce Rufuagbodomo, they decided to call him Rufus and from then, the name stocked.
It was a long and stressful journey from Mangu to Lagos but Odenigbo was prepared for the worse.
Odenigbo landed in Lagos late in the evening. He didn't know where to go, so he decided to find his way to a night club where the sound of music was oozing from. He kept his luggage under the stair and sat in one of the couch at the lounge looking as city men and ladies danced to the music of Michael Bolton.
In his mind, Odenigbo felt like this is the kind of life he had always wished for. There was much to drink and eat provided you are bucked up.
At some moment, he became hungry and didn't have enough money to spend. He thought of approaching one waitress who looked a little mild in her appearance if he could be employed at the club to serve drinks and food.
The lady helped him to acquire the job of a cleaner which comes with an accommodation to be shared with another worker in the organization. Since it was his first night at the job, the lady just asked Odenigbo to watch as she does her things. Before long, Odenigbo have become a famous name at the 07 Night Club.
One night, as he was busy serving drinks to a regular customer who comes with his friends from the ship harbour from Tin Can Wharf, as he looked through the window, he caught a sight of some Lagos boys trying to take advantage of their customers at the parking lot.
Quietly, Odenigbo paced like a cat bunting a rat and disarmed the boys and rescued the customers from the jobless miscreants.
This act earned Odenigbo a special recognition in the club.
In his tenth month at the club, he had become popular that customers started flooding the 07 Night Club. Odenigbo was as a result promoted to the level of the floor manager.
When it was December, the management board of the club gave out a peugeout 504 car, a driver and an orderly to escort Odenigbo to Mangu for a two weeks holiday, all funded by the 07 Night Club.
The car booth was loaded with food stock and some assorted drinks.
In Mangu, the people will marvel at how Odenigbo had grown from a poor village erred boy to a manger of a night club in Lagos.
Throughout the journey, Odenigbo enjoyed the smooth drive. It didn't take long before they reached Mangu.
When Odenigbo reached his father's house, Mazi Nwabuko, there at the entrance is the silver colour of Rufus' bike. The driver punched the horn as people emerged from different corners of the hamlet.
Odenigbo alighted from the owner's side of the car. Traditional drummers, flute players started playing, welcoming back the first car owner in Mangu.
