Review Of Morbius (2022) —Averagely Fascinating!

My huge interest in superhero films led me to watch another of Marvel's DC Comics characters, Morbius (2022) especially after seeing the trailer.

This American action/fantasy focused on two young boys, Milo and Michael, with debilitating diseases who are separated after Michael Morbius was transferred to another school. He promised to find a cure for both of them. Years later, Morbius succeeded in creating artificial blood but declined a Nobel prize awarded to him because his aim had not been achieved.

After a trip to Costa Rica, Morbius with the aid of his colleague, Martine Bancroft, mixes human and bat blood together, injects himself as the human trial and his DNA changes to that of a vampire. He becomes a dual creature that feeds on blood to stay healthy and alive. His friend Milo takes the serum from his lab without his knowledge. This leads to chaos, violence and betrayal. Will Morbius do the right thing by shutting down the experiment? I invite you to watch this interesting movie.

Review

The movie plot is a familiar one and fascinating. The cast did great bringing it to life, the little action scenes kept me on the edge of my seat but the visual effects were not as good as a viewer would expect from a Marvel movie. After seeing the trailer, I had great expectations but it was lowered a bit due to average and a bit wonky visual effects. I think the creators were trying for something different from the usual vampiric mannerisms, still, this one was not so enjoyable.

I love that this movie is an action/fantasy but I did not see much action in it. It's more science related than action/fantasy. Most of the scenes are shot in labs and hospitals, just like in the Venom series. Is it any surprise that Morbius, in one of the scenes, scares a man by saying, "I am Venom, no I'm kidding..."? It was funny and shows the major similarities between the two movies.

Why The Negative Reviews?

I understand that this movie did not do well at the box office due to negative reviews. I think the reason is because its plot is just like most vampire/paranormal movies. Like some viewers, I have seen many vampire and superhero movies. They are often based on a character who is flawed (or disabled), he or she gets bitten by an insect or bat (in the case of vampires) or is subjected to some scientific experiment that changes his DNA, he becomes different and has a nemesis who becomes the villain.

I've seen this same plot with little twists in most superhero films and was hoping for something different since it's a Marvel movie. I believe most viewers hoped for the same thing and were disappointed.

Cast Chemistry

I wanted more for Morbius (played by Jared Leto) as a superhero. I loved his portrayal of the Joker in the superhero film Suicide Squad (2016). Jared Leto is one actor who has received a lot of praise and awards for his artistry and acting. He always gives his best to every character he plays and Morbius is not an exception.

However, one thing I noted that was not impressive is the lack of chemistry between Morbius and his lab partner/ love interest, Martine Bancroft. It was until Michael kissed her on the balcony towards the end of the movie that it became obvious that the lady was his love interest. He was a bit aloof towards her in most parts of the scene thus making the balcony scene seem forced. I think it's the creator's way of spicing up the film but somehow it failed.

Conclusion

For likely crossovers and future sequels, I think Morbius will do better with Tom Hardy's Venom rather than with Tom Holland's Spider-Man as speculated. Venom and Morbius have similar features and stories. Their alter egos are both products of science-based experiments and they can shift at will to handle violent or distressing situations. This is just my opinion but the ultimate decision lies with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I read reviews online and they were disappointing and crazy lol, the story line didn’t play out well …
Milo suddenly became bad just like that?
Dracula could be good sure but a superhero? That’s absurd !!! It could have been better honestly
