SACRED HEARTS SEMINARY SPORTS TOURNAMENT 2022

In the Seminary, many activities are organized to help shape the seminarians into better persons and priests for the Churches missionary work. This activities range from Choir competitions, research competition, and even sports competition etc. This article is about the Seminary sports competition of which seminarians are divided into different groups

The Intergroup Sports Competition (which consists of Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Lawn Tennis, Whot, Ludo, Ayo, Volleyball) of the St Gaetano Errico Seminary was officially kicked off on the 14th of March 2022 by the Delegate Superior Very. Rev. Fr. Geoffery Obinna Nwafor MSSCC

who admonished all present on the importance of the tournament; that it is for the wellbeing of all. He brought to our consciousness that this sporting events should create stronger love and Christ-like fraternity in the spirit of our father founder St Gaetano Errico here in the seminary and beyond. The Olympic torch was lit by the Delegate Superior and given to the Gold medalist of the Inter-hostel Sport Competition 2021 marathon race that was held at Seat of Wisdom Seminary, Owerri.
The football match was between St Gaetano Errico team (Group A) versus Immaculate Heart of Mary team (Group C). In the first half of the match, the opening goal scorer of the competition was Rev. Michael Onyedibe who scored for the St Gaetano Errico with a wonderful kick. The match was a tough one with both sides trying every possible means to get a goal. The first half came to a close and both teams proceeded to different stands to recieve instructions from their coaches.

Soon after the break time, the match resumed for the second half. In the second half, the match became tougher with the Immaculate Heart of Mary team pressing on with more advance striking force which merited them a penalty that was fouled in the 18 yard box with a handball. The penalty goal was scored by Rev. Dickson Terzungwe (myself) who buried the ball at the left side with a well composed kick. Later on another goal was netted by Oruonyeije Mishack with a power-packed shot. Although, the St Gaetano Errico team gained more ball possession trying to equalize but could not convert any of their numerous chances into goal. The match came to an end with Immaculate Heart of Mary winning by two goals to one (St Gaetano Errico Team 1 versus Immaculate Heart of Mary team 2).

Later at night another sports event took place which was the Table Tennis competition between the teams of; St Gaetano Errico (Group A) and St Mary Alacoque (Group B)

and the candidates representing the groups were Rev. Onu Francis and Arimanu Gerald versus Bro Onyebuchi Alex and Ogugba Joseph in both Groups A and B respectively. Rev. Onu Francis and Arimanu Gerald won for St. Gaetano Errico (Group A) in the Singles and Doubles against St. Margret Mary Alacoque (Group B) respectively.
Conclusively, in both events, the brothers (Seminarians and priests) cooperated and gave their support in making sure the games were fun-filled.
