I was moved to make this post by the kind gesture of @bestkizito and @amicablepeace in donating some blurt and in registering one of my friends on this platform. They really taught me the joy in giving without receiving in return.
During the great depression in the early 20th century in America, a government representative traveled through some of the poorer parts of the country to provide financial assistance especially to farmers so that they can buy seeds, run their farms, and fix their homes.
So this government agent came across an elderly woman who was living in a very roughly built house without floor even. The windows were only covered with papers and planks. In fact, she barely managed to survive.
The representative asked her, "Madam, if the government gives you 200 dollars, what would you do with it?" Without hesitation the woman answered, "I will give it to someone who is homeless." Standing with his mouth wide open, the agent did not know what else to say, as he was extremely surprised at the answer he got.
This woman considered her situation less demanding to the situation of one who had not even a block to lay their heads.
No matter the situation we find ourselves in life, we are always better than many other people. We must never allow anything or any situation to make us less empathetic about the good of others. There's a saying that "if you think the world is all wrong, remember it contains people like you." Like the old woman in the story, we must always try to look beyond our present condition. The very thing that you complain of, might be another's blessing or prayer point. Let us always be grateful and charitable even in our thoughts. The old woman was not too poor to give. Ask yourself, "if your present condition is this bad for you, what about those who you are better than?" Learn gratitude, learn charity.
One thing that has dwindled in our generation is the culture of giving. No one wishes to give with the fear that if I give I may lose. Nations do not want to offer help to poorer nation's without undue interests. Those who give most times give to enslave the receiver. The recent decade has seen the polarization of the global community-the rich and the poor. The moment we begin to give more than we receive, then, would equality creep in. Equality does not mean equity. Equality means that everyone would have what is proportionally required for their wellbeing. It doesn't mean everyone will become poor by giving.
On a positive note, the platform called blurt has shown me the readiness of persons to keep giving even to strangers. I have the perception that blurt has created a platform where people can give no matter their own circumstances. Every now and then, we notice persons sharing blurts to newbies, dashing out blurts to support meaningful projects. I think the global community should learn from blurt how to give and turn the world into a better place.
