A gang of self-flagellants passed-by the road just now at the time of this writing. They are the group of Catholic individuals that believes that by harming themselves they will be forgiven with their sins.
They are on their way to the front of Chapels where they will lie face down with arms spread out waiting to be stricken by some appointed individual by a ceremonial whip which actually doesn't hurt the self-flagellant but lying on a very hot concrete road considering that it is already 12:00 PM here is the one that really hurt.
So from that point they are through if they will not go to another chapel to repeat the process again. Those are what the self-flagellants does while not all cross bearers are nailed on the cross but only would endure long walks while carrying their cross.
As stated they do this with a belief that they will be forgiven by their sins and the catholic church allows it but does not seem to care if their members are already doing whatever they want, after all the doctrine of their church is anti to the teachings of the bible.
Anyway, so in their belief this is the day that Christ will be nailed to the cross and will die. Most people that God will die today so they would refrain from eating meat and even taking a bath, maybe their part of penitence but it is surely not written in the Bible regarding these things nor it was practiced by the early Christians.
Most Catholics abide by not eating meat but not all and I do not know if they practice not having a bath or shower because it is too hot during this time of the month. In fact it is predicted that the temperature will reach 35 degrees Celsius today or maybe even more.
I just hope that if you want to be holy in the sight of God then you must do it the right way. There is a thing called the bible, if your doctrine cannot be searched in it then you are in a false religion, a sect that claimed a lot of lives already like in the years of Spanish inquisition where different kinds of torture devices are invented just to force people to recant their anti-catholic sentiments which even if they do they already are maimed for life if not killed in many ways including burning at the stake.

When Jesus said, "take up your cross daily" and Paul said "Participate in the remaining sufferings of Christ" they didn't say this was the way of salvation. They also did not mean harming yourself for spiritual gain. They meant sharing the broken heart of God for this world and also doing your part in your place. A martyr today is not necessarily one who is tortured and dies but it is one who lives by the truth when it is costly to do so.
It all sums up to one thing which is to love God and we can do that by loving our neighbors. "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." if we love our neighbors we will only do good things and by doing so we will be holy by the sight of God. @mineopoly
People forget that we have the great manual... the Bible, where you can find how to obtain salvation.

Yes you are right, if it is not in the bible it is just heresy. We can test things by using the bible as reference.
Like for example here is an analogy about it.
Three persons looks at a tower, one says "This tower is absolutely 10 meters high", the other one says "oh no, no, it is just 8 meters high", the last one says "This tower is 11.5 meters high and I can prove it."
To prove it's height, the third person brought out a tape measure so he can prove the towers real height.
And so like a tape measure we have the bible so we can determine if a teaching is coming from God or it is just an invention of man to cause trouble in the end.
Exactly, great illustration. Nowadays there are many things or rites that are fashionable and that are not in accordance with what the Bible says, so we must be vigilant because the word says that in the last times many will be deceived.
God knows what our heart contains, he still have some mercy to spare for every soul that lived and is living on earth but the times are changing, there are danger everywhere so yes we have to be vigilant and promote love and justice and try to be good in the sight of our Lord God. :)
