Shocker right? Yh, i know. I had the exact same reaction when i found out about it. So then what is the funny bone exactly? And what's all the fuss about it? The funny bone is actually a nerve. 👀Yes, a nerve that happens to run behind your arm, on elbow. This nerve is known as the ulnar nerve. It is also sometimes known as crazy bone in some countries 😂.
Your ulnar nerve is the reason you get that tingly sensation that spreads to your forearm and hand when you accidentally hit your elbow on a hard surface. That tingly sensation is called paraesthesia, or "pins and needles".
You see, while it's busy running it's course from your arm to your hand, it's not always so easily exposed and vulnerable like that. The ulnar nerve begins from a network of nerve in/around your armpit, and passes between muscles and blood vessels in the arm and forearm and hand. However, at the elbow joint, it lies behind the lower part of your arm bone (humerus); so that the nerve is protected only when you're not flexing your forearm.
The ulnar nerve gives sensation to many muscles in your arm, forearm and hand. As said before, injury to the ulnar nerve, or pinching or compressing it causes paraesthesia- that tingly feeling, and some of your muscles may go numb. Also, in cases where you fracture a bone in this region(s) where the ulnar nerve lies, the nerve may be damaged and it could cause a loss of sensation in the area that the nerve passes with it's branches. Hence, you won't be able to feel anything on that area. Sometimes, weakened activities will accompany it.
So with this much said, i hope i have been able to convince you, and not confuse you 😅that the funny bone is actually a nerve, and should be treated with more caution since nerves are really very fragile, and damaging them will be at our own detriment 😊. Have a nice day👍.
