Blurt Poetry Contest | The Simple Poet

in blurtpoem •  3 years ago

Someone asked me recently who I was
and I hesitated to answer
Because...
I am but a simple poet.

I am but a simple poet
Yet
I have more letters behind my name
than the alphabet.

I am but a simple poet,
I bathe in metaphors and
breakfast on word soup,
Dress in ink,
And before you think
I have no skill, I do.

I peel masks away
Everyday
And trace them on paper,
Recreating a new persona,
A new world,
A new possibility for my reader.

I am but a simple poet,
But beware,
Everything is inspiration
For my pen.
And you can never know when
You may read yourself
Laid out for examination
On the surgical table of my poem.

I am but a simple poet,
Clad only in a threadbare coat,
But don’t be deceived by appearances,
I am wealthier than most.

I have walked through lost cities,
Held conversations with ghosts,
Travelled to far off galaxies,
Uncovered the secrets of the universe.

I am but a simple poet,
And I don’t mean to boast
That the Lord has shown me favor.
I think He loves poets most.
