Zebras posing for the camera
A few years ago, I had the good fortune to visit Kenya and go on a safari in Tsavo East National Park. Since then, no holiday has come close. We tried to get back to Kenya the following year (and two subsequent ones), but due to terrorist activities and then by the third year following our trip, it would have taken two days getting there using different airlines flying into different countries as all direct flights from the UK were cancelled.
Elephant herd on the move
I have never experienced anything quite like the safari (and doubt I will again now). Waking up in a luxury tent lodge and seeing a herd of elephants walking by, being stared down by lions, feeding multi-coloured starlings out of the palm of my hand, seeing lions mating. I could go on and on.
Here's looking at you kid
The second lodge we stayed at was perfect. Animals including zebra, elephants, baboons all came with almost touching distance to drink at the watering hole. But one of the most wonderful things was a tunnel leading out from the lodge to a viewing point where the windows were at ground level. I managed to get some decent low level shots of the elephants (well decent in my opinion). Although the sound of the elephants walking over the underground viewing room was a little disconcerting.
Elephants at low level
I have to say the people were wonderful as was the food (no fish and chips or full English breakfast - more localised food). And the guides were excellent, so knowledgeable, they seemed to know where to take us. And when. So we could see the wild animals in their surroundings at their most natural.
Kingfisher
When we weren't on safari we were based in Kilifi, not too far away from Mombasa. A beautiful verdant area, so unlike the arid, red dusted national park. We were next to a creek so there was always lots of small wild animals (vervet monkeys were all over the hotel grounds) giant centipedes, kingfishers and so much more. Oh, I really need to get back there.
About me:
I can mostly be found shooting models, aviation, motorsports and, when I can, wildlife. But I enjoy most aspects of photography.
