Genesis 29:26-30

We saw that Jacob got a surprise new wife last week. Ooops! He woke up with Leah instead of Rachel. He was aghast, to say the least. Today we read Laban's excuse as to why he gave Jacob the older daughter instead of the one that he loved.

What is a man to do when he loves a woman? Will he start a fight with her father? Does he just walk away with the wrong woman and complain that he was defrauded? He has no choice but to comply with Laban's request in today's passage.

Note that marriages in those days consisted of sexual consummation and nothing more. See what it says below when Jacob finally gets the wife he ordered, "So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah..." The word va-yavo (so he went) is the same that would be used if someone went to Egypt.

Today's reading##### EnglishLaban said, "It is not so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me another seven years." Jacob did so, and completed her week. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. (Laban gave his female servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served Laban for another seven years.- - -
