Following the announcement by billionaire Elon Musk that he and Donald Trump had reached an agreement to close the U.S. Agency for International Development, staff members have been told to avoid the agency's Washington offices.
According to a message given to employees early on Monday, this is the case.
A growing number of Republican lawmakers, Musk, and Trump have targeted the U.S. assistance and development agency, which manages security, development, and humanitarian programs in more than 120 nations. They claim that it supports liberal causes.
Around 600 employees of USAID report that they were locked out of the agency's computer systems during the course of the night.
On Monday, February 3, agency employees will no longer be able to access the headquarters building, according to emails sent to those who could still access the system.
Democratic politicians have voiced their disapproval of these events, claiming that Trump is not constitutionally authorized to close USAID without the consent of Congress.
