Real estate magnate Truong My Lan was sentenced to death in Vietnam on Tuesday following a court denied her request for mercy against the conviction she received for theft and bribery in a well-known billion fraudulent case, according to official media.
Due to her involvement in the largest financial fraud case in Vietnam's history, Lan, the head of the real estate developer Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was given a death sentence in April. Online publication VnExpress stated that the High People's Court in southern Ho Chi Minh City found no justification for lowering Lan's death sentence. "The sentence may be changed to life imprisonment if Lan is able to recover three-quarters of the money that was embezzled while he was on death row," the report stated.
