Nigeria's primary labor organization, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declared a statewide protest for February 4 in response to the government-approved 50% increase in cellphone rates.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) officially authorized the first pricing change in more than ten years, citing depreciation of the naira and inflation. The rise, meanwhile, is still less than the 100% increase providers had been requesting for the previous six years.
With living expenses on the rise, NLC President Joe Ajaero called the hike "insensitive" and called for its immediate halt. In the event that authorities reject talks, the union threatened a potential telecom service protest and strike.
The NCC justified the hike , saying it was necessary on other for consumers to safeguarded and also necessary for the expansion of business.
Changes had to be communicated effectively, and service quality had to be improved.
The financial crisis in Nigeria is currently getting worse , organizations responsible for the advocating of consumers have sworn to challenge the decision.
