Iryna Farion, a 60-year-old linguistic professor, received a gunshot on Friday in the street in the western city of Lviv.

Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of Lviv regional office, confirmed on Telegram that Ms. Farion passed away in the hospital following the shooting. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that the killing was not natural and that police were searching for a motive.
A significant police operation, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, began on Saturday.

Ms. Farion's political party, Svoboda (Freedom), which is hardline nationalist, directly accused Russia of being responsible for the murder.
