According to police on Monday, nine men lost their lives after a sizable mountain of gravel fell on them as they were working in a quarry in Zambia.
According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the men were putting stones onto a truck while operating illegally in the quarry. The truck driver was taken to the hospital after surviving with injuries.
The fall occurred on Sunday at a Chongwe quarry, around 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Lusaka, the capital.
On Sunday, eight bodies were found, and as darkness fell, the rescue effort was called off. On Monday, a ninth body was removed, according to the police.
The guys and the truck were buried under the gravel, according to Evans Lupiya, the district commissioner for Chongwe. Investigation has been currently launched by the police.
There have been multiple deadly incidents in Zambia involving guys who were working illegally in mines or quarries.
In December, heavy trains caused landslides at an open-pit copper mine in the north of the country, burying around thirty unpaid miners alive inside tunnels.
