Reporters were informed by Dr. Ngashi Ngongo in the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that three of the five new cases were confirmed to be Ebola, while two were reported to be likely Ebola. There had been no direct epidemiological connection between the current cluster and another that was responsible for nine prior Ebola cases, that included the outbreak's first death, according to the Africa CDC.

The same fate is being experienced by another African nation as Rwanda stated in December that its own Marburg outbreak was over, while Tanzania reported a breakout of the Ebola-like disease in January. Numerous Ebola outbreaks have occurred in Uganda, including one that claimed hundreds of lives in 2000.
